I was considering upgrading my GPU. I was wondering what the best GPU was to upgrade too. I currently have a NVidia GeForce GT 420 and was wondering if the NVidia GeForce 690 was the best on the market or if there is another GPU I should consider or upgrade too?

I am currently running World Community Grid, SIMAP, Moo Wrapper, and Primegrid. I would also like to run GPUGRID in the future. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

By the time or just after your new GPU is in, there'll of course be another better GPU available. That always happens that way. :-(

But we're not here to dictate what you should or shouldn't buy, that's all dependent on your financial situation and what you feel is best for your system. ;-)

By the way, Dutchman teaching an American English: it's "to upgrade to". Too is another word for "as well", not an overstepping bound for "to". :)

Thanks for the response. I was and am just looking for input. I totally realize the decision is up to me. I couldn't find the compute capability of the GeForce 690 at nVidias' website since from my understanding that the 690 is built for graphics performance and not for computing performance per se.

Thanks again for your response.

There's a post on GPU Grid where skgiven lists the NVidia cards and classifies them:

http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=2507

The post was updated 10 days ago so it will still be relevant. I think this classification is probably applicable to all projects that use NVidia GPU.

There's also a Wikipedia comparison of NVidia cards:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units

When I was choosing a card last year I looked at both those pages and also compared the prices at a couple of shops. I then took into account what Richard Haselgrove had said: 'I usually buy towards the top of what's currently available, but never the actual 'top-of-range' (where they charge silly money).' The newest and fastest card probably costs as much as some perfectly respectable complete computers.

You also need to consider the size of the card you want to make sure it will fit.

Good extra advice. Also make sure your PSU (power supply unit) can take the (extra) strain. If your computer is still under warranty, ask the people who built it if you can open it!
