BOINC 6.10.51 released for testing for Macintosh

Charlie Fenton wrote:
Unfortunately, we found a show-stopper bug in 6.10.50: the "Network
activity always available" item in the Advanced menu did not work.
This release fixes that.

I've released the mac build for immediate alpha testing. I expect
Rom will do the same for the other platforms shortly.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,

Disclaimer
On development versions of BOINC:
- Expect parts of it to be broken, or in the least to work in a different way than you are used to.
- Expect work failures, deadline misses and losing all your accumulated work in progress, or not getting credit for your work due to unknown and unforeseen circumstances.
- Only use it when you are willing to participate in the Alpha test program and do not mind sending (bug) reports in to the developers on the email list specially assigned for this purpose.

REMINDER TO ALL ALPHA TESTERS:
It's far easier for the developers to fix problems when you send message logs with the appropriate flags set. The main flags are:

<cpu_sched_debug>: problems involving the choice of applications to run.
<work_fetch_debug>: problems involving work fetch (which projects are asked for work, and how much).
<rr_simulation>: problems involving jobs being run in high-priority mode.
<std_debug>: problems involving short term debt.

Use these flags from the cc_config.xml file.

Report any problems you get with it to the Alpha email list. This list needs registration.

Reporting bugs on this forum or any project's forum isn't very productive as the developers simply do not have time to scour through all forums looking for posts with your bug reports in them. While it may happen that we - other volunteers - forward your problem to them, history has shown it is quite difficult being the middle man in this when more information is needed from you. Hence why it's better for all concerned that you report the problem directly to the developers, who will come back directly to you when they need more information or better logs or to tell you that they've checked in a fix for the specific problem.

The actual change log was taken from the Alpha email list and the Trac Timeline repository changes check-ins. This disclaimer was written by the volunteer moderators of this forum and approved of by the BOINC development team.

Change Log:
6.10.50->6.10.51:

- client: Restore RUN_MODE_ALWAYS functionality in network suspension logic which as lost in code cleanup of 26 Apr 2010.

Instructions for testing new 'Transfer at most' preference:

Both BOINC Alpha and SETI@Home Beta have a new preference deployed on their websites called 'Transfer at Most' which tells BOINC how much data it can upload/download for a given period of days. Like the other preferences these values can be overridden in the advanced preferences dialog. Further descriptions of the various preferences can be found here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Preferences

Please give the new preference a try, use large values, small values, and even negative values for both input fields. Try attaching to a project after the bandwidth limit has been exceeded.

Change Log:

6.10.51->6.10.52

  • client: fix messages: asking for X instances doesn't mean that X instances are idle.
  • manager: if user clicks Retry in Transfer tab while network is suspended, show an alert.
  • manager: in transfers tab, show it if transfers are suspended because network is suspended.
  • manager: in tasks tab, if a task is downloading or uploading and network is suspended, show it.
  • client: day boundary for "transfer at most X in N days" is midnight local time, not UTC.
  • client: fix build break
  • manager: fix tooltip msgs

BOINC 6.10.53 released for testing for Windows and Linux

Rom Walton wrote:
This release should fix the timezone issue. This release also includes an additional random amount of time (up to an hour) after midnight for
each of the uploads and downloads to avoid overloading the server.

If I am reading the code correctly, after midnight the status of the files being transferred will be changed from suspended to a timer that begins to countdown.

Please report bugs to this email list and test results to

  • client: enable bandwidth quota limit only if both #MB and #days are nonzero.
  • client: fix memory leak
  • client: on resume from net bandwidth quota suspend, apply same random backoff to all transfers.
  • client: when changing ncpus via config file, don't modify host_info.p_ncpus
  • client: show effective #CPUs separately from physical #
  • client: clear config before rereading config file.
This means that, e.g. if you remove <ncpus> it will revert to the actual number. However, it also means that any config params set via command line will be overridden.
  • client: fix crashing bug.
Deleting records in ~COPROCS() was bad, since we copy HOST_INFO to APP_INIT_DATA, leading to a double deletion.

We have a new release of the 6.10 client to test. This release should solve the issue of the BOINC client software crashing when either the ATI or Nvidia drivers have been incorrectly installed or are clashing with one another.

At present we just have the general tests enabled, we will turn on the rest of the test areas when 10 people have logged test results to the alpha project.

Please report test results to the alpha project as quickly as possible and report bug reports to this email list.

Thanks in advance.

- Mac Installer: fix typos in installer build script.

- lib: Fix the value returned from get_mac_addresses() on Macintosh computers. It has returned the value of kernResult, which is 0 on success, instead of true for success, since the routine was first written in November 2008. This causes the client to generate a new random CPID every time the client is launched.

- Re-enable the memory leak detection code for the 6.10 branch.

- WIN: Treat Windows SEH exceptions as C++ exceptions so they can be trapped using the standard try/catch handlers.

- WIN: Wrap the coproc detection stuff in C++ exception handlers. If for some reason the Nvidia or ATI APIs cause an exception don't use the GPUs and don't crash BOINC.

6.10.58 released for testing for Linux, Linux x64

I've uploaded the x86 and x64 Linux packages up to the download site.

I've also updated the alpha site test groups to enable the .58 Linux builds. Please give .58 a walkthrough and report test results to the alpha site.

Thanks in advance.

BOINC 6.10.60 released for Windows and Linux.

Change Log:

  • Linux: Project list issue in the attach wizard that lead to a crash.
  • SCR: Follow the Mac's lead and gracefully exit the Data Management thread. Preserve the handle to take more drastic actions should that not work.
  • SCR: Fix compile breaks.

Linux versions are released through package managers.
