I've been running boinc on Fedora Core 6 for some time, with no real problems. I've just switched distros and am now running Sidux (based on Debian). I've also upgraded to the latest version of boinc. I'm not sure whether it's the change of distro or the change of boinc version, but boinc now seems to be using a lot more RAM than it was before. I have 1GB RAM and boinc appears to be using about 100GB more than it was before. I've also noticed that my dual processor is getting hotter now - my laptop fan used to come on when the temps got close to 50C, but would go off once the temp dropped a few degrees. Since switching to the new version my fan seems to run constantly and my temps are sitting around 55C. If I stop boinc, things return to normal. This difference definitely seems to be related to upgrading to the latest version. Is this a known issue with the latest version? |

Latest version = ? Did you install from Berkeley or from your distro's package manager? Kathryn :o) |

Latest version = ? I installed it via apt-get from terminal (I don't use the package manager). It's version 5.10.8 - but I'm looking at the debian site now and I see now that it appears to be the test version not the latest stable. Maybe I should downgrade it .... |

Yes. It is a test version. An old one at that, but there hasn't been a newer alpha release (we're up to 5.10.16 for Windows and Mac). FWIW, 5.10.8 has been running pretty much flawlessly on Unbuntu. I'm booted into Windows right now so I can't check on memory usage. But I would try a downgrade and see if that clears things up. If it does, I can report it to the alpha list for you (or you can register and do it). It's also possible that some of the more recent check-ins fix the issue. I'm looking at this one from 5.10.14 - Client: radically faster (on Win) version of dir_size() (from John McLeod) Kathryn :o) |

I have 1GB RAM and boinc appears to be using about 100GB more than it was before. How could it be doing that? So if the 100GB was a typo, what is it using more? 100MB or 100KB? Big difference. Reciting from memory, BOINC uses around 4MB of memory in my Linux. |

I'll give it another couple of days and take closer note of the memory usage. If necessary I'll downgrade back to the stable version. Thanks for the help! |

OK, I decided to uninstall the test version and went back to 5.8.16 (downloaded from the boinc site). I've installed it, but when it tries to connect to the server it's giving me an error message - "problem with SSL CA certificate". It then defers communications. Also, which files from the previous installation (that are still sitting in my home directory) should I copy to the new BOINC directory, so that it can pick up where it left off, or am I better to just dump those and let it start from scratch? |
