I disabled the boinc screen saver, I have none selected. If I tell boinc to run based on preferences then go away, I look at the messages and see it'll run for maybe a minute, then suspend thinking I'm active, then a few minutes later run again, then suspect, it actually doesn't get much work done.

I don't like the screen saver because on windows XP it logs me out and I have to log back in (even though programs are still running).

What I wind up doing is telling boinc to run always which is a pain. is there another solution?

The main case when Boinc has an impact on the PC is when the work units are using up too much memory - how much memory is there on your PC, and which projects do you tend to have running at a time?

In addition, I've read that BOINC will sometimes see an active AV as activity. I've never come across the issue myself in testing. And I don't recall which AVs were involved.

I have 1g of memory. I run Climate Predicaiton, SETI@Home and Einstein, although only 2 of the 3 run at the same time.

That sounds OK memory-wise (as long as you're running an operating system other than Vista), CPDN takes 100MB, not sure about seti and einstein, but I don't think they're particularly hungry projects.

The idle priority level should be giving the effect you want - i.e., as soon as you do anything on your PC, your work takes priority over Boinc, and there shouldn't be any memory issues in your case.

If you were running memory-intensive projects like SAP or Predictor, then you might be feeling an impact from the memory consumption despite the use of idle priority. The Vista o/s needs a lot of memory and would need to be taken into account if you use it.
