Hi There, I am running Climateprediction, which takes like 3 months, so I also wanna switch between my favourit, setiboinc.. But I get this message, when trying to get work "11/21/2006 2:54:19 PM||Suspending work fetch because computer is overcommitted." It kinda annoys me, because I wanna run both, but climate should not decide wether I can run more or less, just because it's a big job.. what do I do? Bent |

Hi There, Boinc obviously thinks there is a possibility that Climate wont make its deadline if it download work from other projects. It temporarily needs to give Climate some extra cycles to meet its primary rule of returning work on time. When it calculates that it can make deadline again, it will restart downloading the other projects and make up for the extra time it gave Climate to follow its second rule which is to follow your resource share. Boinc is very conservative in its calculations when it comes to making deadline so it sometime over react for a while. Just let it do its thing and all will be well in the long run. This is a common occurrence with all the Climate projects and their super long WU. They can give Boinc a fit as it continuously adjust the Climates ETA which is dependent on what else the computer is being used for. Boinc V 7.4.36 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB NVidia 470 |

I'm not sure that's actually the case, I've heard of people who can't get work for their second core. Don't know what version of Boinc was involved. But 'Don't get new work' is a good idea for the climate projects since it gives you manual control over what is downloaded. Someone confident with playing around with the XML could adjust the estimated dates + performance figures so that Boinc no longer thinks the deadline will be missed. I don't know the relevant settings to change. The easiest thing to do is to increase the resource share for climate until Boinc thinks that it will successfully complete the WU within the deadline. |

The next version of Boinc will have some additional fine tuning of the scheduler, especially for multicore computer, which should better handle projects like Climate and these long WU. But, there is no real way of getting around the need for extra time other than increasing the resource share. Boinc V 7.4.36 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB NVidia 470 |

Part of the trouble is that the initial completion time estimate isn't actually that good (based on the benchmark, which is useless). It's a pity that the scheduler doesn't use %complete combined with time-so-far, which is an extremely accurate way to work it out as far as the climate projects are concerned. However, %complete is not accurate for some other projects (Rosetta is a good example), hence the current way of doing things. Ideally each project could specify which estimation method to use - if this was possible then the scheduler would be a lot more accurate. Also, missing the deadline is harmless in the climate projects, but the scheduler panics in a big way. If there were some way for the project to tell the scheduler that it doesn't matter so much for this project, that would also be an improvement. |
