I have installed Boinc running three projects on a PC (Sony VAIO laptop with an Intel Core Duo 1.83 MHz processor). I have also installed Boinc running the same three projects on a MacBook Pro (Intel Core Duo 2.16 MHz processor). I've set my prefs to take 100% of CPU time (couldn't make it any higher than 100%) and to use up to 8 processors. On the Mac, two processes run at once and the third is pre-empted. This is what I expect. On the PC, however, I can't seem to get more than one process to run at a time. The other two are always pre-empted. Both computers log into the same account with the same preferences. Am I mis-understanding something? Thanks. |

Try updating your client, you may not have the preferences downloaded yet. If that doesn't work restart the client and/or computer. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

Try updating your client, you may not have the preferences downloaded yet. If that doesn't work restart the client and/or computer. Done that; doesn't help. It's interesting: The Mac reports its CPU use in OS X differently (even not using BOINC) than the PC does: The Mac can get up to 200% CPU use, where the PC won't go over 100%, so the Mac OS sees two processors where Windows XP SP 2 (latest updates) only sees 1. While I'd rather run one project on one core and a second on the other core, the way the Mac does, the PC will only run one project, but it seems to run on both cores. In the end, then, this will do the same amount of work I think. Am I right on this, or is there another problem? I'd appreciate any additional assistance. Thanks. |

Windows reports differently, 100% is probably using both cores. Change to the performance tab of the task manager, you should see a graph for each processor in that tab. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

UPDATE: I scratched my head for a long time, and finally went to the SONY VAIO website and flashed my SZ120B/P's BIOS. This fixed the problem. For some reason, the computer was confused and thought it had only one processor (although it was still fast). Thanks for all the help. |
