I am getting ready to build my BOINC server. I was wondering if the Intel Xeon E5-4640 v2 processor is supported and if it can handle 4 of these CPUs? Additional specs include 128GB of PC3-14900 1866MHz DDR3 ECC and SSDs in RAID 5, no GPUs.

?

Are you building a Server so you can run a new project, Or are you building a server so you can crunch Boinc on it? (amongst other things).

If you don't supply a clear description of what it's intended for, you won't get good answers.

My apologies for not being very descriptive. Its primary use will be for World Community Grid on BOINC. Still deciding on the OS, its between Windows Server 2008 or 2012, or CentOS.

I have not seen one show up yet with 4640 v2 chips but I see no reason why they would not work there are plenty of v2 chips running in a 2P configuration. personally I have 5 - 4P 4650 rigs running with no problems so we know the 4P configuration works. Although I do run Linux on mine.

I would recommend running Linux if you plan on running the VINA apps at WCG. Those apps run much faster under Linux and therefore you will finish more work units and score more points as a result. However, if you are not familiar with Linux, you may want to go with Windows. That choice is yours.
