Does anyone know if there is a problem with the Einstein@Home project, and if so when it might be back online. For some reason I am not only unable to upload data, but it appears all URLs connected with the project are also down.

Just hot in from email:

Einstein@Home experienced a major air-conditioning failure about 24 hours ago and will be off-line for at least another 24 hours.

Always keep 4-7 days of worth of work downloaded, for just such an event.

Thanks for the help. Since it appeared everything was down, I assumed their forum would be as well. If it's only going to be 2 or 3 days, I should have plenty of worked on all 5 of my machines.

How do I change the number of days of downloaded work on my system? Sorry for the dumb question. But I hear this mentioned all the time, and haven't run across how to do it on my own.

Go to the project and select "View and modify your account". Under Preferences select view or edit "General preferences". Select "Edit preferences". The one to modify is "Connect to network about every
(determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days)". I believe default is .01. Need to have enough disk space available for extended amounts of cache.

Before I'm going to accumulate large numbers of completed jobs that I will have to upload , as well as possible download new data, when the server is back up and running, I'm going to first get a look at what kind of a log jam there is going be. It it's anything like SETI used to be several years ago, I could have a line tied up for several hours attempting to upload my finished work.

I hope I'm going to be wrong, but I would rather wait and be certain I can send my completed work within a reasonable time period, rather than end up having to delete some work in order to free up my one land line. Yes, there are some of us who still use 56K dialup connections.

Any news on Einstein@Home?
Any good reason for the Einstein-admins, not to put up a working status-page on a prominent location?

We're getting pretty nervous here at team "Special:Off-Topic"...

kind regards

So they don't have a spare 386-machine anywhere on this planet, to host a small static status-display? I don't quite understand why it is impossible to change the DNS-Entry for http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ to point to a working computer that keeps us informed...

It's definitely not a very smart move, to keep the donors of so many kWh of electrical energy in the dark...

Sorry, I know this is off-topic here, but I don't know where else to articulate my frustration... :-/

sincerely

It takes 24 to 48 hours for DNS to propagate all over the internet. So that wouldn't exactly be a good thing to do. Plus what matters more to you? That they get it fixed, or that they leave messages on a website all the time?

Even if they left a message "We broke down, we're working to get it fixed" on a stationary server, that wouldn't be enough for others. Some people apparently need to be kept up to date every minute. Knowing that they broke down and that they are trying to fix it ought to be enough information.

Everyone just read Eric Myer's post here and click on the picture links to see what the UWM/Einstein server room looks like. :)

They are back up, but it's slow going.

We are making good progress in restarting the project. Now that the web pages are up, we will first enable file uploads and then enable the scheduler. It may be some hours before we are again handing out new work and everything is functioning normally. We'll post further reports here when we have more news.

Einstein@Home is back up and running. Because of the backlog of work that has been completed by YOUR computers in the past few days, our systems may be somewhat slow at uploading this completed work and handing out new work. So please be patient if it takes a bit of time before your computers are busy crunching away! Note: experience shows that recovery from this type of 'hard' failure can take some time; there may be new problems that appear, which may require rapid shut-down and additional corrective action at our end. But we will try hard to avoid this if possible.

I hope I'm in error, but I believe the project has just gone down again. I can't connect to any sites via browser or BOINC Manager.

Ditto. Yesterday they said:
Thank you for your patience: Einstein@Home is now running normally again. Over the weekend some additional construction/repair work will be done. This work has been planned so as not to interfere with the project. However if something does go wrong we may be 'off the air' again, at least briefly. We will try hard to prevent this from happening.

Maybe they were being overly optimistic, or maybe something else broke down.
