Along with the snooze and/or suspend option, it would be helpful if the tray icon (in Windows) indicated that it was in those modes so it isn't accidentally left that way.

It does. Suspend BOINC and hover your mouse over the icon. In windows at least the big yellow box will come up saying what BOINC is doing.

Hovering, while easy, still requires "doing something." A better solution (at least to me) is to have the actual icon change. Symantec does this with their Anti-Virus and Firewall products so it is obvious that they are suspended.

Gotcha, and it did so in the past. Maybe it's on the to-do list together with sortable columns. I'll check around. :)

Don't know if this is the best place for this post, but...

The manager starts BOINC with the default project data location. Could this (or the BOINC client itself) incorporate a permanent option to choose where the project data will be stored at? I am aware of the -dir option, but so far that doesn't work with what I'm trying to do...

I am trying to install BOINC onto my school's computer lab to do something productive and give people something nicer than the windows logo to look at :)

Unfortunately, I have three requirements:
1. The boinc project data must run off a windows network share.
2. The screensaver must show the project interface, not the default "% done" message.
3. The boinc process must not run in its own window. Running via the manager is acceptable.

I tried running BOINC as a serice; the screensaver doesn't "work" if the service uses a network account.

The screensaver does work but the network share is not available as a mapped drive when running the service using the local service account.

Can get the screensaver to work nicely with the network share using a login script or shortcut, but the BOINC procees appears as a user program. I think most users would close this window, defeating the purpose.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Mike

Your best bet would be to write to the Developers email list and ask there. This list needs registration. http://www.ssl.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/boinc_dev

Some of the Changes in 5.4.9:

A different port number, only port 31416 is used. This to prevent hijacking the port number by the OS or other applications and BOINC Manager saying it can't contact the client.

The traffic you see on your firewall is because the Boinc Manager's Task tab is now updated every second. So each second, Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe communicate with eachother. (Note: Leaving Boinc Manager open on the Tasks tab, when you have over 0.5 days worth of queue can take up some CPU cycles due to the refresh.)

What is the Tasks tab? Version 5.2.13 has a work tab and a project tab but no Tasks tab.

I regularly leave BOINC manager open on the Work tab. Is this only true when connected to the internet? Is this just a fraction of a percent of the CPU cycles?

Note: Running a single WIN XP computer that connects to an ISP by dial-up.

Tasks is the new name for Work.
So the No new work/Allow new work button has also changed names to No new tasks/Allow new tasks.

Too bad it's still impossible to install as a SYSTEM-Service... :(

Is Windows NT no longer (correctly) supported?
- On my W2K and XP machines, 5.4.9 installs just fine.
- WinNT complains about a missing "SENSAPI.DLL"?! Don't know what this is, but it prevents BoincMGR from starting. The service is running ok, but shows this error on every start... I found this filed as a bug in Alpha-Test, so it SHOULD be corrected before it becomes a "recommended" version, shouldn't it?
- for Linux I haven't found the "console-only" version (I am using Ubuntu "Dapper" / server-version w/o GUI). I tried to checkout "stable" from CVS, but compilation reports version 5.2.15, which isn't even listed as "recommended" or "older" - why this?

I am confused. Should I upgrade to 5.4.9?

I will be leaving Boinc Manager open on the Tasks tab fairly regularly. Since I use dial-up I will be keeping 2 days of queue. All my clients are running on my single computer.

Do you think that this configuration will take up more CPU cycles than running Rosetta graphics? I don't care about one percent, more or less, of CPU cycles. I would care about a 10 percent reduction in processing power.

The maximum amount of CPU cycles taken from it is 7, as far as I know. It really depends on the length of the list. Mind, it doesn't take CPU cycles when you minimize the manager to the system tray, so all you see is the icon there.

It's only when the Boinc Manager is minimized in the Windows Task Bar.

Thanks a lot Ageless. It sounds like the effect will be minor.

With dial-up and only one phone line I have gotten in the habit of leaving BOINC open when I am not using the computer. When I come back to the machine I can always notice one possible reason, staring me in the face, for logging back onto my ISP. It helps me minimize my time online a little bit.. At other times it is pleasant to watch my computer doing some useful work while I am goofing-off

the new manager is looking real sweet
just two questions

1) why use 3 decimal point for progress the only projects i can see this being of any use are the cpdn projects ?

2)after upgrading said project (cpdn) has taken over all my boinc projects and run them all down saying that my pc is overcommited (it wasnt before i upgraded )
hope it wont take to long to settle down as i normally run 12-14 projects (resorce share 100 (7.14%) and switching every hour
but at present cpdn has been running for 3 days solid now (a bit unfair for my other projects )

RALPH (Rosetta Alpha) needs this.

Boinc 5.4.9 has a better Work Scheduler and CPU scheduler.

A couple of changes to the CPU scheduler:

1) The check to enter EDF if a result is due within 2 * connect every X days is gone.
2) The check to enter EDF if a result is due within 24 hours is gone.
3) The concept of a computation deadline that is earlier than the report deadline has been introduced. The host will attempt to get work done by the computation deadline by entering EDF if needed. The computation deadline is: the report deadline - (connect every X + switch tasks every X + 24 hours).

thanks ageless

1) been running ralph since feb and didnt realise about the 3 decimal doh

2) having read your link and hopefully understanding it properly cpdn can and will monopolise my pc until boinc decides that it is ok to carry on with other projects (which could be days or even weeks of 24/7 crunching )it just bugs me that there was no conflict before i upgraded and there was as soon as i updated :-(

if this is the case then i will have to abort the w/u and detach from cpdn as i attached to so many projects as i could run so that my pc could do as much varied science as possable cpdn is not my first choice of projects i am afraid

this might have come to a head anyway as i am waiting for planet quest and orbit to come online with orbit hopefully before 2039 :-) BOOM

p.s if anyone has any news on possable relesase dates for account creation please let me know as both these projects are more the sort of science i am into

Hi,
I have a little problem with 5.4.9-gnu when controlling a remote machine (select computer ...option)
When I suspend the network activity, I can still download new work but can't upload it (I experienced that on the LHC project with very short Wus).

More: I noticed that when I suspend network activity, the activity is really suspended 5 min later. This is the log (I suspend the network activity at 7:26 am just after reporting finished Work for Malaria@home but the network activity is really suspended at 7:31 am):

dim 21 mai 2006 07:26:53 CEST|malariacontrol.net beta|Scheduler request succeeded
dim 21 mai 2006 07:31:46 CEST||Suspending network activity - user request

As Boinc 5.2.13 was working well, and I've changed nothing in my network config, I suppose the problem comes from the 5.4.9 version...
Boinc 5.4.9 with OpenSuse 10.0

Edit: another log (suspending networt activity at 10.46 am after manually updating LHC, restarting Malaria project at 10.51 am)

dim 21 mai 2006 10:46:28 CEST|LHC@home|Reason: Requested by user
dim 21 mai 2006 10:46:28 CEST|LHC@home|Reporting 2 tasks
dim 21 mai 2006 10:46:33 CEST|LHC@home|Scheduler request succeeded

I just updated to 5.4.9 and didnt have any issues. Just wrote right over the old installation.

However, can someone tell me what the "snooze" does exactly? And how long it lasts? Previously, when I wanted to do something with my PC that needed every last cycle I just right clicked the icon and hit suspend. Now it seems snooze does the same thing, but it seems to just come out of it after a time (not exactly sure how long). Suspend is still available from the activity menu, but that means I gotta open the client to set that. It'd be great if snooze had an option for how long, or just worked like suspend (manual resume). I figure this was added because people would forget boinc was suspended. So on that note I agree, the icon should go black and white or something when its suspended.

I am attepting to install version 5.4.9 (currently running 5.2.13). I continually receive the message that the installer can't find Boinc.msi. Any suggestions on the cause?

I haven't personally tested it but I believe the Snooze is meant to suspend all Boinc activity for one hour. I agree it would be nice to have a tray indication of Boinc or network suspension.
