I've been a Seti@home user since nearly the beginning of the project, and I jumped on the BOINC bandwagon the instant classic SETI shut down. Since then I've focused on projects that I am personally interested in, or projects that could have a profound impact in the scientific world.

Lately I've been expanding to just about any BOINC project that exists, on the feeling that even if I set the resource share low, at least I'll be helping out even if I'm not terribly interested in it.

Problem is that my list of projects is growing very long, and I am becoming concerned that one of these days I'll attach to an alpha or beta project that is less than benign, and I'll regret it.

I know I can use BoincSynergy and BOINCstats to get a list of projects that exist, but is there any place I can go to find if a project is...well...trustworthy? Or can I trust that if it's on a big site such as BoincSynergy that it is safe to attach to?

It would be my hope, but that's all it is, that the projects showing on the Add Project pick list -of the official BOINC distribution- are the safe ones. If they've not given their credentials, made it to that pick list, or as some volunteer keeps doing, keeps dumping links to new urls here and elsewhere without checking what they do and if legit, then don't attach, period.

If you check the project's website you will often see that it is hosted on a university domain and is run by a professor or other university staff member or graduate student. I think that's a decent (perhaps not perfect) assurance that the project is not malware.
