I see this not as an external type of promotion, but as an internal one.

When you receive points for results you have uploaded, BOINC could show you those points in some kind of pop-up while praising you for using BOINC.

I believe this could help increase loyalty to BOINC. Without this feature, since you're not thinking everyday about the fact that you're running BOINC, you might forget to install it when you buy your new computer.
