They do still have some basic things up and running. The upload server was on all this time. And of course nothing went wrong the past hours, or this page would've dropped off as well. |

Seems it was a partial shutdown to be on the safe side. I suppose in a way Uni campuses are like governments in that they don't have any in-house experts outside of their field. Examples being NHS and Tax computer projects run by outside consultants that don't work after milions of pounds have been spent. Then Unis's which are academic institutions farming out the electrics to contractors. Well, one thing does come to mind for a server farm. All the kit is supposed to be on dual power supplies. It may be that the lab boys were not sure that both supplies were in working order, or may have even had kit that does not have dual power. Uni quite rightly may have the work done so only the A side or the B side of the mains would be down at one time. If your kit is dual power and you plugged the cords in right, you are up, no interruptions. If you aren't sure about your donated not in warranty kit ..... especially the surge suppressors for when the power is switched ..... Of course Matt's last post talked about some failed drives too. What a wonderful time to replace them and let them hot sync back with hardly any I/O load. BTW Chris, I think you will find that UC Berkeley offers a degree in electrical/electronics engineering. The classes you need to pass the state test for a license to design and build public power plants and distribution systems. I'm sure they have experts. ![]() |

Hi Gary, Well, the Facilities Maintenance web pages, part of the Real Estate division, at Berkeley are "under construction" but looking at some of the other nine campuses in the University of California they all have staff electric workers. Being government, The State of California, they likely handle the routine but contract the long term projects or those needing specialized equipment. Be assured they are a 100% union shop. ![]() |

Ok, perhaps I am being a little unfair to UCB. But over the last few years I can recall a number of unplanned power outages where manholes exploded, or cable was stolen, and also fibre internet services up the hill to the lab failing. That was one of the drivers to re-locate the Seti closet to the Colo. I've just got the impression rightly or wrongly that its all run a bit haphazardly for a Uni campus. I wonder if those modern ideas of outsourcing come from places like, err, the Haas School of Business :D |

Welcome wandering travelers, the outpost is open for business. ![]() |

I haven't got a single one. :) But then that's normal, as I only let BOINC run in the evenings, and even then only when not gaming. With the room temperature now approaching 30C (84F), I doubt I'll be allowing Seti to do any work tonight. And while the new case is now sitting in my living room, it won't be until tomorrow that I'll be moving everything over. I'm a little static today, hopefully that's more normalized tomorrow. |

Must be me. I know you intended humor, but I found it offensive.the outpost is open for business. In any case the sign says platinum, gold, silver or bit coin only, no funny paper. If you want credit, remember clause 42 on the application, ET will do an anal probe as part of the vetting process. ;-) ![]() |

Hi kemosabe, swap {censored} for a cold beer? Chingachgook say my credit good!Must be me. I know you intended humor, but I found it offensive. Want me to flog or flail him? Oh and you, for quoting his offensive stuff. I'll give everyone time to edit their posts. That way I don't have to delete stuff left and right. :) In any case the sign says platinum, gold, silver or bit coin only, no funny paper. Just the day I bought 42 bars of Gold Pressed Latinum and then it's not on he list. Sigh. |

Must be me. I know you intended humor, but I found it offensive. Then you really wouldn't like Stan Freeburg's 'Sale of Manhattan' bit from his 1961 History of the United States of America album.... Anyway....kitties checking in. They are bummed that their AP fetching has been interrupted by the weekly outage. They were doing pretty good, bringing them home like little mousies. Meow. |

Hello everyone :) :))))) yes please... and don't worry about removing the flies :) I actually cooked one last night :/ Poor thing :( Don't know what it was thinking. Anyway - he/she is not why I'm here... I do hope no one's waiting for an answer from me in the tool thread. It lurched into the space between my ears about 4am last Wednesday as a memory of something I'd forgotten to do... only took 3 months :) I thought I'd have time to sort out the debacle - but in the time it took me to work out the thread wasn't on the first page, then aim the cursor at the link to page two, the outrage occurred. It was good!! :) you know... to feel part of it all again, however briefly :) How is everyone? It's so nice to see you all! edit: apologies for my insensitivity re: the interruption of AP downloads :/ I got carried away by a "me" moment :) |

In any case the sign says platinum, gold, silver or bit coin only, no funny paper. Perhaps you could swap it for dilithium and then convert that into something the bartender will take. ![]() |

Quoting Chris' original post without the swapping part. I wonder if those modern ideas of outsourcing come from places like, err, the Haas School of Business :D As for the other words in there, neither are considered racist or anything according to Google or Wikipedia. Really, the political correctness may shoot through a tiny bit too much at times. Let's burn all Karl May books, all Lone Ranger paraphernalia, and all westerns with John Wayne in it. |

As for the other words in there, neither are considered racist or anything according to Google or Wikipedia.FYI: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1307346/posts If it got that far in the legal process, someone found it rather offensive. Then white men had to rule on the emotions of the First Peoples. Kind of like the term an American football team from Washington DC uses to describe itself, or a baseball team in Atlanta. Takes a while for it to sink in to some that while they have zero intent to offend in their use of a word, others who came before have so sullied the word that its mere utterance is offensive, bringing back memories of abuse. ![]() |
