Ah, they're looking for people to store it for them. This from a local news blog: US to purchase up to 75 million barrels of oil |

So no one posting about the stellar price of US oil then, ey? What did it end at, -$35 per barrel? This makes sense in a weird way. It is the futures market. Some months ago you promised to buy some oil at a fixed price hoping the market price would be higher than the price you promised. Unfortunately the world demand for oil dropped big time due to the lack of demand because of the pandemic . Oil companies stored as much as they had room for but now the storage is full. Tuesday is the due date for these futures. so you are going to be stuck with cheap oil but no place to put it so you pay someone to take it, hence a negative price. |

So no one posting about the stellar price of US oil then, ey? What did it end at, -$35 per barrel? Slightly worse than that. All the futures are for delivery at a specific place, which happens to store oil. It is slightly over 3/4 full, and that is before the contracts expire. So what do you do? Pay storage fees on worthless product? That's like airlines parking planes. So you beg someone to take your oil. They don't want it because like you they would have to pay to store it. Mind you the prices are for the May contract, the June contract was still on the plus side. If it tanks too, well, the producers will have to stop the pumps and leave it in the ground. Won't have anyplace to put it if they pumped it up. This negative price will do more to stop the Keystone pipeline than all the regulations, environmental protests and court casts put together. Drill baby Drill, and we didn't or there would be a huge government bailout of oil! |

I've lost track of what day of the week it is. The seti maintenance shutdown shook me. It is Tuesday! I'm here and I'm sorry to say that my alcohol stash is rather small at the moment, so I'll do more howling than drinking. edit: belated congrats to Richard! |

.It seems Dull has been on sabbatical for a while. He came back and went away again in record time. Wonder if that means double length? |

May not have made any difference to SETI but my sacrifice (large glass of mead) seems to have brought these forums back. |

Anyone want to guess how many hours it will be down? Will it be down long enough to start our ritual of howling at the moon and burning hair? |

The need to smell the acrid stench of burn't hair is a powerful thing. |

Whereas, the auto-message first thing this morning still said they were foregoing maintenance this week. They've forgotten to change that back again (as, I suspect, an awful lot of things have been forgotten or neglected). |

It's down, life is good but sheltering in place sucks. |
