British take on the power situation - reasons and outcomes. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-49982236 Yes, until you have seen it first hand, you can't begin to believe the scale of the events.that happen. Fire departments can't stop it. Only when the wind dies down and the rain comes. Numbers simply don't convey the facts. It isn't just a couple of houses that burn, it is a couple of entire cities that burn. It doesn't help that our hills are covered in Chaparral a/k/a gasoline bush. Our brothers in Australia have similar issues with their fire season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd45_wuGy2A |

Well it looks like the power at Berkeley was cut at 4:00. Site was working then suddenly went dark. Do you have power. If not, don't bother to post. Never mind false alarm. They came back up. |

I do hope every single person affected demands a refund and compensation for stuff that defrosts in freezers etc. It sounds like they have skimped on their infrastructure for years. |

Posted more than 30mins ago : "Servers Remain Up During Power Outage - Large swaths of Northern California, including the UC Berkeley Campus, are under a Public Safety Power Shutoff due to high winds and the associated wildfire risks. Our servers are located in the campus Data Center which is protected by a high capacity UPS. We expect that our servers will remain up for the duration of the outage. Thus far Internet connectivity also remains up although this depends on factors outside of the Data Center." (10 Oct 2019, 16:57:08 UTC) https://setiathome.berkeley.edu https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84743#2014894 I do hope every single person affected demands a refund and compensation for stuff that defrosts in freezers etc. It sounds like they have skimped on their infrastructure for years.Hydro-Quebec, our local electric utility, makes clear that it's the customers' responsibility to have a backup energy source in case of emergency. I don't see why it wld be different for PG&E :/ I hope ac is back as soon as the santa anna winds subside. A few years ago power was cut off here during 2 weeks outside major urban centers due to freezing rains that damaged countless electrical pylons. Remediation measures have been taken by H-Qc to avoid this the next time it happens, but it sure was hell for those without backup energy sources (thankfully, family and community ressources were in place to help them go through). |

I still have a couple of gallons of mead so will break one open. Will have to make some more though and in the spring send my bees out to work again. Edit: Downrightnow is telling me both main site and testing are down for CPDN. Might need to open something else as well as the mead. Edit2: CPDN back up. A gallon of mead should suffice. |

Well Juan could go down to the pub, he seems to have perfected that technique. |

Ah, the fun of an alternate work site. No one here to bug me, just texts and e-mail. |

Well Juan could go down to the pub, he seems to have perfected that technique. I'm trying to do my best, any sacrifice is valid for the SETI cause. |
