Just sent a note off to Eric, Matt, and Jeff asking somebody to look into the pitiful splitting rate of the AP splitters.... Maybe somebody can do a bit o' kicking. EDIT... Eric responded that he's going in to the lab to replace a failed hard drive, and he'll have a look see at the splitters then. |

Some news from the kitties that should be relayed to Panic Mode in NC that might explain a few things for some folks. Matt has explained to me that the AP database is not fully healed, and automated processes are working in the background to complete repairs. It may be some weeks yet before this has been completed. So, that is the reason that the AP assimilators have been offline, and the AP waiting for assimilation queue has been growing. Since that work has to be stored temporarily until assimilation can commence, that storage space has filled up, and that is the primary reason that the AP splitters are working so slowly...nowhere to go with the work. They are going to increase the disk space for storing AP work, and that should allow the AP splitters to get back up to speed again, hopefully soon. Meow for now! |

... that storage space has filled up, and that is the primary reason that the AP splitters are working so slowly...nowhere to go with the work. Since MB work occupies the same fanout directories as AP work, that will affect MB splitting as well. But at least we can crack on with returning MB work for assimilation, and thus recycle the limited space available. |

I have posted it in NC. Thank you very much, Bernie. It was more information than I was previously aware of. I thought the AP database recovery was complete, and it is not. I was hoping that the additional information might help sooth some of the grumbling going on. So far, it looks like the operation was successful. Meow meow meow! |

I was hoping that the additional information might help sooth some of the grumbling going on. lol, that's not grumbling, that's people who don't know what to do with their lives. I was sitting here shaking my head in wonder of those posts. And figuring that if you felt so strongly about it, that the first thing you'd do then was rip out the checkbook and write them a massive donation, before telling them that you were coming over with lots of helpful and knowledgeable volunteers to do an Extreme Makeover, Seti Edition. But alas, I can only dream. :) |

Some donate computer resources to Seti. Some donate hard cash. I happen to have done a fair amount of both over the years, so I guess I have a right to say more than some. And all I'll say right now is I'll give the classic single finger salute to any and everybody who makes comments along the lines of 'the staff doesn't care', 'the staff does not do enough to fix things', etc., etc., etc.. They all care a LOT. And do so in the face of sometimes very difficult problems. If the project had infinite funding, sure...they could go out tomorrow and hire some scientific programmers to do more on nitpicker, sort through the collected results more thoroughly, send out daily progress reports, and a lot of more 'feel good' things other than the science that is being done every day. And buy some humongous servers to support all that activity. Fact is, my friends..... They don't have those funds. The original, and in my opinion the BEST distributed computing project under the Boinc umbrella is probably also one of the most poorly funded today. Most of the servers that are in use today were donated outright, or made possible by fundraising campaigns by myself, the GPUUG, and a few others. Get real, folks. If your choice is to donate only your computer resources, that is indeed a fine thing. And I am not trying to belittle in any way those who only do so. But then, don't come banging around in the NC forums whining about how the project or it's devoted staff is not living up to your expectations. Thank you. |

Oh, meowcrappins. I chucked a filling or broke a molar today at work...dunno which. And I was just chewing on some soft gummy candies. With vitamin C. No pain from it yet. I'll have to call the dentist tomorrow and see when I can get in for them to have a looky-see. And I'm supposed to go in tomorrow on my usual day off to work some MORE overtime. No fun getting old...LOL. |
