Volpex@UH, a project at University of Houston, seeks alpha testers. Volpex@UH is studying how to use BOINC to do parallel computing across multiple hosts.

I'm already attached to this project and get workunits from time to time. But most of them finishes with error.

Will this be a CPU only project or will it also use GPUs?

Newcomers take note... This project isn't going to look like your typical BOINC project, at least not when it comes to the status of results. Read the post "How VolPEx is different from other volunteer computing projects" to get some indication.

Cheers,

Dave -- The reCAPTCHA approach is quite trying, to say the least.
Am going to attempt to attach project, via my BOINC Manager.

Dave -- Am not going to try to second-guess the reCAPTCHA pgrm.,
again. Can you just sign me up? The other approach, via the BOINC
Manager, doesn't work for me, either.

Thanks,

jim

Jim,

Email Dave's appointments secretary at [email protected] and book an appointment. He'll fly down there on SETI's Gulfstream and attach your computer for you. Won't cost you a dime. No BS!! He won't come unless you promise to make him perogies, all he can eat, and put out Ben and Jerry's for dessert. And no comments about how his pants make him look fat it hurts his feelings.

"Windows" -- an American English word, meaning "A real operating system is too hard for me."

This is a very different project. The results always either get cancelled by the server or end up with error status but they get credit anyway because the tasks actually do useful work in spite of the errors and cancelling. They're using BOINC in a very, very different way.

It's a "proof of concept" sort of project. They're trying to demonstrate BOINC can be used in this new and crazy way that employs parallel execution. If they are successful then it opens the doors to types of investigations that cannot be done using the traditional BOINC paradigm. The problem is their new approach doesn't work well unless they have lots of hosts attached. It's complicated but it's to do with their "parallel approach". They need more hosts.

If you can spare some CPU cycles Volpex could use your assistance in proving that parallel execution works on the BOINC platform. Use http://volpex.cs.uh.edu/VCP/ in the Add Project wizard or create an account first.

Also, volunteers should be aware that when a VOLPEX task is "running", it is often in "sleep mode" and isn't using a CPU to do work. Unfortunately, with the current application, this idle CPU is not available for other projects. For more information on this, see the thread Idle CPU While VOLPEX Runs.

The website seems to be down and has been for a while. It comes up but mostly blank pages.

Hmm. I've been checking there every day for ages to see what's happening and I've had no problems at all with the site. Just checked again and it's up as usual.

Cheers,

It's working for me now too. I'm reluctant to try this yet as ritterm's post above indicates there could be a problem with it.

I wouldn't be afraid to try it. I haven't run the project in a few weeks (a personal choice not driven by the project's behavior), but believed at the time of my post that the project was working as designed. I didn't mean to imply that there was any problem with it.

Users do need to be aware that it's a project in the early stages and doesn't behave like any other BOINC project -- tasks run in strange ways, results status can be very confusing, and it can look like you're not getting credit for work done even though you are. I would encourage you and others to read through the forums to get an idea of how it behaves and then give it a try.

Happy crunching,

MarkR

Well as long as it isn't going to stop other projects from running and thereby overshooting their time limits I'm willing. I'll add it soon along with 1 other, when I can decide which projects don't use GPU's.
(Got bitten before by GPU work so am avoiding it from now on).
