Might be because as much as despite. Perhaps the changes there were to get the programmers and administrators motivated to support the project. Much of the communications load there is carried by the volunteers.

Despite the fancy new website, CPDN seems to lurch from one crisis to the next.

It amazes me that there is no government or UN support for such an important scientific endeavour. I understand the scientists use these models for reports to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).

Collatz remains in mystery land. I suspect, since the home page 'maintenance mode' page remains unchanged since Saturday, that Slicker is away. If he was around and trying to resolve matters, he'd likely have updated the home page by now.

Hey, Ageless.

I just noticed I can get Malariacontol on my cellphone when I go through the cell-phone system, but not if I try the wifi. So for some reason, my home network (real computers) is not allowing any communications with that domain.

I guess I'll start by bypassing the router. It's a learning opportunity. Sigh.

Yesterday, the only troubleshooting I did was to re-start the router, and then a more-drastic restoring the router to factory defaults, and I still couldn't get MalariaControl. Re-setup my preferred SSIDs, etc., and everything was working -- browsing and streaming music from around the world, except my browser and my BOINC still couldn't reach the malariacontrol.net domain. That's the last I touched it.

My plan was to wake up this morning and phone the DSL company and ask them if they had some algorithm that was identifying my BOINC as spyware, and maybe they were blocking it.

But when I woke up, all my BOINC clients were working again, and I can browse to MalariaControl's website. Not because of anything I did, I don't think.

I didn't learn anything, and I don't think it's because I'm over half-a-century old, this time.

Best luck,
-neil-

YES. The mighty CPDN is back up and running. I was starting to wonder if it was just me. I have been having trouble with my wireless router lately. Connection keep dropping. Maybe it is time to get a new, faster, more secure one. WEP just doesn’t make it anymore.

The Einstein server is being rebooted as I type this. They're going to do a filecheck on the system. Will take a couple of hours.

Collatz has been down for a week now. The emergency home page has been around for that week, unchanged. Either Slicker is out of town and on vacation, or otherwise unavailable since, with that emergency hope page up and running, if he was onsite, it would show some more information.

Hopefully it is simply a real vacation and that on his return, Collatz will revert to its (up to the past month or so) steady running state.

Collatz remains offline -- now through 9 days and two weekends. Has anyone made any contact with Slicker? I know it is a one person project and thus totally dependent on Slicker to maintain and communicate on the project, but he's been so solid over the years I'm wondering if perhaps something untoward has happened with him.

I knew that I had read something, somewhere about a possible extended Collatz outage, but it took me awhile to find it. There's a post by Slicker in the BOINCstats forum that might be pertinent:

Posted 2013-07-12 16:49:17

The server crashed this morning leaving the MySQL innodb tables in a corrupted state. The log files were also corrupted. Since MySQL can't even start, repair is out of the question. (Why can't it start and make the corrupted database unavailable so that one can drop it and then restore instead of wiping out the entire innodb installation and starting from scratch? Gotta love freeware.) The good news is that the database backups ran just a short while prior to the crash. A replacement server was purchased and already in the process of being configured so rather than restore to the existing [flaky] server, it will be restored to the new server. The bad news is that it will take a few days, and, if I can't get it all configured and up and running by Tuesday, Collatz may be down for another week or more due to other obligations.

Thanks much for that information -- so it looks like Collatz will return perhaps later this week.

Well, that post was for the first outage when the server died. He managed to get the new one up and running by the weekend following his post, but it went down a few days later and was initially just a blackhole when you tried to connect.

So given what he said, I'm not really expecting to see much action until the first of the month, maybe this weekend if we're lucky.

CPDN Scheduled downtime: 2- 5 Aug 2013

The server room in which CPDN resides is due to be shut down for electrical testing on 2 August 2013. The testing will take place over the weekend, and CPDN servers will be brought back online on 5 August 2013 (assuming everything goes to plan).

There will be NO CPDN service during this time from any Oxford machines:

cpdnbeta.oerc.ox.ac.uk
seacourt.oerc.ox.ac.uk

...and any others that I may have forgotten.

Unfortunately I will be on annual leave on 5 August, so I will have to leave the turning on to Mr Bowery and our diligent IT staff.

Yeah -- that makes sense perhaps this weekend, or next weekend. It is a one person shop -- and it's been so solid for a long time -- so we should all be understanding. Fortunately for me, I flagged it going offline within 6 hours or so and immediately shifted over to other projects (mostly Moowrap and MW and POEM) for my ATI GPU work.

Anybody have any information on CPDN? I've seen the latest posts on the electrical testing, upgrades but I thought I read that that should be finished by Monday. I guess it's still down due to a broken RAID array? I'm running out of WU's and have a dozen or so waiting to report, I hope the black out won't last much longer, been doing Rosetta and Docking in the time being. Weather@home seems to be down also, must be that time of the year to get the upgrades done.
