I'm new. My understanding is that BOINC looks at the computers total disk capacity and based upon "how much to allocate to boinc" uses that amount as a random selection from the available disks. Would it make sense to assign boinc's disk allocation to a specific disk OR filesystem?, i.e., I would like to add on a 1TB disk and have boinc use only that disk. I imagine this as being a modification to the boinc manager.

My reason would be to "know" were data is being written and allow for easier cleanup/disk management.

The data directory used by BOINC is not chosen randomly.

During the installation process, one screen shows you the default location for BOINC's data directory and tells you to click the 'Advanced' button (on the same screen) to change it if you want.

If you want to have BOINC use a data directory other than the one it's currently using, you'll need to uninstall BOINC, move the data from the old directory to the new one, and then reinstall BOINC and chose the new location for the data directory.

I did this earlier this year and it was relatively painless: after the reinstall, BOINC picked up right where it left off.

(You didn't mention what operating system you're using; my cooments are for Windows.)

-------------------------

Also, the BOINC preferences let you control how much hard drive space BOINC is allowed to use. Advanced view is a little more configurable than Simple view.

Edit: here's a link to a FAQ that lists the default data directories for various operating systems.

tan,

thanks for the reply. sorry for the delay. I decided I wanted to upgrade to FC17 (Linux) from 14. It was a major hurdle but everything seems to be back and running and I just installed BOINC.

During the install I did not "see" any screen that indicated a directory. the advanced button did not suggest any directories either. Maybe there is a difference between Win and Linux.

thanks.

See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Fedora for where Fedora puts everything when you use the repository installation.

When using the Berkeley Installer, see http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC where it says: The BOINC working directory can be moved elsewhere as you like, and can even be renamed. One common choice is ~/.boinc, since files and directories with names that begin with "dot" do not show up by default in Unix directory listings. Whatever the name, everything related to the BOINC client is contained within that directory, and you should always run the client and the manager from that working directory.
