No offense but that's the way I feel. Alien civilizations that do exist are probably too technologically advanced be detected by radio waves. Aliens could literally be sitting right behind you and your computer watching you read this and be silently laughing and you would never know it!! Lets solve problems here on earth first!! Switch to protein folding or something that we know for sure benefits humanity!!!

You do realize that the only reason BOINC exists was SETI@home, then the Project Director decided to open it for others to use.

If SETI@home never existed, there wouldn't have BOINC.

Did not know that. Ok, so It served its purpose as BOINC is awesome, but now that those other applications exist like protein folding/drug research, switch to them!!

I don't think any BOINC projects support pharmaceutical companies in a quest to introduce GM foods. But many of us do think the protein folding projects help advance fundamental research.

The head of climateprediction.net said a few years ago to a group of us that of course he thought CPDN was the best of all the projects. He then added that if by chance SETI does find something it will immediately become the greatest project.

Maybe they will get interested one day and set out to find out how we live on this planet, with all of the crap we generate on a daiy basis. If I was outside looking in, I'm absolutely shore I wouldn't want to mix with us for any reason
regardless of the reasons we want to put foward to give reason for looking for them.
We will ONLY find them if they want us to find them, because they have been around here long enough to know what we are.
I think that the Apollo program proved that we are too big to be playing around
in space, too much need for tucker and toilets.

Franco-many people run many projects not only Seti. Please have respect for the Seti program and the people who work extremely hard to run it.

I used to divide my BOINC time between SETI@home and Rosetta@home. I initially did it because SETI was having down-time problems and I'd frequently run out of work (even with the pathetic computer I had then). But I've suspended Rosetta because (a) the WUs were too large (for my puny HD), (b) the client itself was too ill-behaved (and did not play well with others), and (c) they were having a lot of down-time problems as well.

If any of you have some suggestions for other worthy projects, I'd be glad to hear about them. i'm now running Ubuntu 12.04 on a much faster and larger computer and I'll be running it 24/7.

Thanks

Ross

Sounds like http://lhcathome2.cern.ch/test4theory/ would be a perfect match for a user like you.

It's true SETI spawned BOINC but that doesn't mean SETI is a sensible way to spend your unused CPU cycles. And it is a fact that if it discovered an ET SETI would become the most important project. Unfortunately that fact doesn't change the fact that the chance of finding an ET is so small we can call it 0 chance. There are a trillion different ways an ET civilization could be communicating and generating signals that demonstrate there is an intelligence behind them. To think that SETI project has even the slightest chance of discovering those signals is absolutely absurd. Anybody who thinks that also believes it is possible to put a lump of sugar in a dead pig's mouth and suck on its anus and eventually taste some sweetness.

I am convinced there are ETs out there and I have a hunch they may have visited Earth already but we're not going to find them with a project like SETI. There's nothing wrong with the way the project is managed or run it's just that their methodology will never find what they seek. Now here is the trick... If we had more spare CPU cycles than we knew what to do with then heck why not spend some of those on a useless search. Unfortunately spare CPU cycles are in short supply. We don't have enough to go around so the wise thing to do is spend them on projects that have some chance of success, even a miniscule chance but not on SETI which has 0 chance.

Maybe this discussion would best be had on the SETI forums (as mentioned at the top of the forums)...

Maybe you best go moderate your own forum and leave moderation of this forum to the mods chosen to do the job which I see does not include you.

Or are you saying they are idiots who can't do their job without your help?

Or are you saying your browser automatically comes to this forum in spite of everything you've done to stop it? And then it forces you to read all of these messages that disagree with your opinion? And you're not man enough to take that?

If you are insuinating that I'm insulting Ageless (the mod) that is incorrect.

Click this link.

Read the posting at the top of this window:

Yes you are insulting him. You're implying he has failed to do his job and remove this conversation. It's his job, not yours, to decide when and how to interpret rules posted in this forum.

Go moderate your own forum. Here you're just another guest so act like a guest and not the moderator.

After all, if you don't approve of the content you don't have to read it unless, of course, you don't know how to prevent tyour browser from taking you here.

As far as I read Blurf's post it was a general hint, whether you want to follow it or not. There's absolutely no need to go dictate to others what they should or shouldn't do here, doggybob (or should I say Dagorath?). You're no longer a moderator here anymore either, after you screwed up by banishing the administrator of a project you didn't like the looks of.

So I would appreciate it if you took a big step back as well, read your posts out loud to yourself before posting them, to decide for yourself if your latest post required the reader to wear asbestos or not, and else just not to post it.

Or are you saying your browser automatically comes to this forum in spite of everything you've done to stop it? And then it forces you to read all of these messages that disagree with your opinion? And you're not man enough to take that?

Yeah, likewise. Your browser seems to automatically return here as well, in spite of one or more accounts being banished. Is it us you can't live with, or are you just flaccid?

I warned you yesterday and asked you to behave, after your --then-- latest flame fest. It would seem you have difficulty reading, have difficult understanding requests from moderators, or plainly have difficulty dealing with anyone else online. I only tend to warn once. Therefore, I've decided to give this account of yours a one week leave.

Yes, I am aware that you can re-register without trouble. Any next account you post with will just be banished again.
