I'm a BOINC newbie, and I have a question about when BOINC runs. I have it set to run whenever the PC has been idle for 10 minutes. However, when I close my PC (Windows 7) laptop's lid, it automatically goes to sleep. Will BOINC run while the PC is asleep? Thanks, Bobby |

No, no program runs when the PC is asleep or in hibernation. Then all active programs are either stored to memory (sleep) or on disk (hibernation) with minimum power required to keep them 'alive'. |

Ah, okay, I guess I'll have to keep the lid open at night to allow BOINC to run. Thanks, Bobby |

It is possible to disable sleep when your computer has its lid closed, in your power settings. I have mine set so that closing the lid just turns the screen off and BOINC continues to run. It's very handy. |

Closing lid and let BOINC continue to run... somehow this strikes me as a potential melt/fry situation. Certainly the area around my laptop keyboard is integrated part of the heat dissipation surface [it's metal and get's positively warm when 8 cores run 100%]... Also the keyboard itself could have air inlets / exhausts]. Strongly recommend to install a temperature grapher such as TThrottle to establish nothing bad will develop. Fans revving out is a sign, but crunching on a laptop full out most always makes the fan run max anyhow. So, leave the lid adjar, at least 3-5 inches. Works for me. Just a 2 cents "experience expert" opinion. Coelum Non Animum Mutant, Qui Trans Mare Currunt |

"Know thine laptop". Mine has air inlet grilles on the base, and fan exhaust on the left-hand side. No sign of air movement on the keyboard side, except when I turn the speakers up loud. So, positive air pressure from the cooler stand underneath, and keeping desk clutter clear of the left side, works for me. All-night GPU crunching with the lid closed (and hence the screen drawing less power) works fine. |
