I was wondering if anyone can give me ideas on how to run Boinc from a USB stick? I can run the program 10 hours per day but will need to switch computers and thus the need for a USB stick. I think someone had this question using an older boinc version and I would like to know if it is possible now with the new version. Installing into the PC is not an option for me since the PC does not belong to me all day. I am using a Window based system. |

You'll need http://www.dotsch.de/boinc/Dotsch_UX.html, which runs a light Linux version with BOINC 6.10 No one has updated for BOINC 7.0 yet. I wouldn't hold my breath on anyone doing it that quickly either. But then, I've been proven wrong before. ;-) |

... more than you would like, but who cares, we're all just volunteering what we know [or don't which is when Dunning-Kruger start looking in] ;>) I was wondering if anyone can give me ideas on how to run Boinc from a USB stick? Just get the latest LiveCD ISO image of Ubuntu and put it on your desktop, then Pendrive installer https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent which allows you to pick the distro, through 12.04, and go with any stick that has e.g. 8GB [cheaper cheaper they become]. Pendrive has tips how to increase the default casper-rw file to whatever size you like it to be and go. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/create-a-larger-than-4gb-casper-partition/ Running 8 threads concurrent on a 64GB USB 3.0 thumbdrive [not cheap though]. Oh, and it's running BOINC 7.0.27 off from ppa:pkg-boinc/testing you'll find over at launchpad. --//-- |

I would like to run it at work Then first ask your boss for permission. [url=http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Usage_rulesThe BOINC Usage Rules[/url] state: Run BOINC only on computers that you own, or for which you have obtained the owner's permission. Some companies and schools have policies that prohibit using their computers for BOINC-based projects. People have been fired over running BOINC on work computers without prior permission. |
