I have a DUO CORE 2.4 gig desktop that is using both cores and the CPU test shows each CPU is twice as fast as my single core laptop.

The desktop is taking 6 hours per work unit and the laptop takes 3 hours per unit.

Am I missing something? Is the size of the work units smaller because the server checks the machine trying to download?

I assumed the desktop would be a lot faster.

Why not ask at the SETI forum? There we also could see the different tasks to get more information.
