Message 3663 - Posted: 27 Mar 2006, 18:16:44 UTC

Hi
Lateley Im getting this message on one od my two computers ONLY.

Boinc Manager is not able to connect to a Boinc Client. Would you like to try again? Yes/No

I try again, and I get the same thing over an over, and the onlything that fixes it it rebooting, but only sometimes, not everytime.

Appreciate any help.

Check the task manager and see if boinc.exe is in the list of processes. If not, it sounds like the boinc.exe program died. You should be able to fix this by exiting the boinc manager program and restarting it. Boinc manager will start the boinc.exe program if it isn't running when you launch it.

Hey thanks. That was it, so I simply reinstalled and all was well.

This seems to have cured mine as well :-)

However, have to ask the question, "What has changed on or before 29th March to cause this?" I have rebooted several times and each time it has failed to connect. I have tried at various times to use the "File" and "Select computer" route unsuccessfully to kick it into life again.

Do I need now to add boinc.exe to my startup in WXP?

Well, I find James Drews posting on this forum, a few days ago.
Sorry again, thanks

I, too, have had this problem since the end of the previous month; however, no amount of rebooting allows boinc manager to connect to local host. No work has been done since. (I am away most of the week as a truck driver and that is the reason I signed up for this silly prject.)

Jay, if you're a windows user click here and try this version of boinc.

may the coops always be closed for you, driver.

This is what I did to remedy my problem:
1) Start\\ Control Panel\\ Add/Remove Programs
2) (After list populates) Select "Boinc Manager"
3) Click on "Click here for support information"
4) Click on "Repair"
5) Click on "Close"
6) Click on "Change"
7) Follow InstallSheild instructions.
This worked for me.

Seem to have it fixed properly now. Tried the repair method as used by Jay,
but didn't work. Then tried a complete un-install followed by an install.
All the projects and stats were preserved and it now starts up OK, showing
both boinc and boincmgr EXEs as running without having to resort to creating
a startup entry for boinc.exe .

I had this problem start today after a reboot and I tried all of the ideas mentioned above, but nothing worked.
Then I remembered a week or so ago I had a virus infect some aspects of JAVA on my machine and my virus checker deleted the infected files automatically. I had not rebooted since this event until today.
I reinstalled JAVA, rebooted and Boinc started with no problems.

All is ok!

I too had this problem twice. The first time I had to delete everything and then reinstall and attach to each project again. This time I just installed the new version http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.3.31_windows_intelx86.exe and that fixed everything.

Please everyone, have a little patience. We're closing on the release date of BOINC 5.4.7 or .8

That one will have this fixed. As it is using a different port to communicate between boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe. At this moment port 1043 is used, but that port's been taken up by a couple of Microsoft applications. They don't mind to steal.

So the next BOINC will use port 31416, until that one is stolen by Microsoft. ;)

Sorry about the last post. Hit reply too soon.

Anyway, so is the solution just to wait a few days uneil 5.4.X is available for download? If so, that's certainly easiest.

As an aside, does BOINC have an e-mail list one can subscribe to to be notified of new versions and such?

TNX,
Scott

There is the BOINC Developers email list, but that's a bit overkill for just watching a BOINC release. If you check the forums of any project you crunch for on a regular basis, someone will post up a notice when it is released. :)

As well as that someone will post it here on the BOINC forums.

It might not be a bad idea to have a BOINC notify list for users that lets folks know about new releases, problems, and such. Just a suggestion.

Scott

someone wrote a script for that over a year ago, but I haven't heard of it lately, and can't remember it's name.

Well, since there are so many projects out there, it's easier to follow through the various forums. A new GUI is in the make which either checks itself for an update, or has an option button to check for an update.

The problem with an email list is that people have to subscribe for it. The BOINC developers are best left at what they do: develop BOINC. Don't think that because I have a moderator tag here, that I am working for the University of Berkeley or am into developing BOINC. I just requested to be a moderator here to fight the SPAMmers. But otherwise, I am just running the program, alpha testing the new versions and helping out on the various forums. ;)
