Hello, I had a lot of problems with uploading today from a pc and after more than 6 hours trying to, while I need to study, all messed up as I got several error messages from boinc. I will install a new version but after several versions trying to install I get this message over and over again. "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package 'BOINC.msi' in the box below." Can anyone help please. What do I wrong and/or where can I find this BOINC.msi? Thanks a lot, TJ |

There can be a number of reasons for this. Most commonly, you can get round it by re-installing the old version of BOINC you were running before the trouble started. There are more explanations and workrounds in this BOINC FAQ. |

Jord Thanks, I have installed th windows uninstaller program you mentioned after long searchign for it, a dozen times but it is nowhere to find on my pc. Otehr options don't work. I tried repair first, reinstalling the samer version and such. I am afraid the pc must be completely new installed. But I don't have time. So no more BOINC in the coming weeks. Greetings from, TJ |

Please see http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=119, your best option is step 1. Thanks Jord, After trying a lot i did the methode with version 5 install via command line. Works. After upgrading to 6.10.60 same msi error. So I did the same with 6.10.60 and it worked, but my data drive is d:/science/Boinc/Data and ther it is not refering to it goes to the common in the Boinc_Temp (I made as you told). It run one Einstein cuda, I sent it in. And then deleted the boinc_temp but then I got errors again. How can I change manually a file so that DATA directs to the path I want (and have)? What can I do to update a next version? That will be msi problems again I guess? Hope you will help me once more. Thanks for your time. Greetings from, TJ |

Sorry, I went away for personal time. Anyway, I'm not sure what all you tried, but it sounds like your data directory is corrupted. What you can try to do is uninstall BOINC first. Then copy your present data directory to elsewhere, either on another drive, or just another directory. Next install BOINC and in the 3rd screen in the installer, click Advanced. In the next screen, change the second path to where you copied your data directory to. Then continue the installation as normal. If that works, it was something corrupt in the data directory and this has fixed that. You can then delete the OLD data directory. |

Sorry, I went away for personal time. No problem Jord, an answer is always better than none and you can't sit behind your pc all the time. I tried all your steps from 1 to 5. But after search no boinc.wmi to find and to delete. The uninstaller didn't work. Your tip is what I tried a few times but after the third screen the nagging over the boinc.wmi starts again, where I never pass. Even with uninstall. Then I must perhaps work in the register. Anyway I have that pc dowm no and go to sleep. Greetings from, TJ |

But after search no boinc.wmi to find and to delete. It's not boinc.wmi, but boinc.msi .. this stands for MicroSoft Installer. isn't there any ini file where I can set where my data file is? The default paths to the data directories are: Windows 98/SE/ME: C:\Windows\All Users\BOINC\ or C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\BOINC\ (*) Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\ (*) Windows Vista/Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ (*) (*) This directory may well be hidden, so either put the path to it directly into Windows Explorer, or instruct Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders. |

But after search no boinc.wmi to find and to delete. I am still awake. I know these standard settings, but I don't want that on C: I have now: d:\science\boinc and d:\science\boinc\data I have that on all my pc's and is working fine, only one system was making trouble this morning as I was not able to send files to rosetta, upload pending for 5 hours. i should have left it along I think. What I mean is where can I let BOINC know where I have my data directory? Normally I do thta wit the installer and than Advanced, working fine till today as the BOINC.msi (you are right again ;-) ) is causing all trouble. If I (someone help me thus) resolve the msi problem than all is okay. Greetings from, TJ |

So do a manual search for BOINC.msi (I found that Windows may not find any results if you search for boinc.msi, when the filename is BOINC.msi) and delete those entries by hand. Then try to install BOINC anew. |

I searched for all the BOINC.msi files and deleted them. Did try to remove BOINC via software remove but then the message that it is looking for the BOINC cdrom with file name 1 where normally the BOINC.msi file could not be found. Has someone an idea, Jord? The only thing I can think of is format c: and do a new installation of the terrible windows and the needed programs. Unfortunately I need windows because I use some tailor made programs that run only in windows. Greetings from, TJ |

The exact message is: The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'BOINC' disk and click OK. At "Use source:" is now standing 1, previously the unfindable BOINC.msi files. Why is installing or reinstalling BOINC so troublesome lately? I did many installations in the past without any issues. This is not fun and very time consuming. Greetings from, TJ |

Hi, If all else fails, fetch the Microsoft Windows Installation Cleanup tool. It still works on Vista and W7 [no longer endorsed by MS]. Others use a tool such as Revo Uninstaller, but for the one time removal of BOINC from the registry Cleanup is good enough. Handle with care... select the BOINC installation entry from the installed program list, confirm you got the right line and go. --//-- |

You could do a registry search for all entries of BOINC.msi and remove those. Start->Run->type regedit and click OK. (Alternatively, Start->type regedit in search->doubleclick regedit.exe) Edit->Find, type BOINC.msi in the search box, wait for any entry to come up and when found press Delete, confirm the deletion. Press F3 to continue searching. When none are found anymore, reboot the system. Now try to install BOINC. Reformatting the drive and reinstalling Windows shouldn't be needed. Although it is Windows that's confused about where it left these parts of the program. |

SekeRob2 and Jord, Thanks for the help. I used both your suggestions and indeed I could install BOINC again. Booted the system and now error reports, BOINC stopped working, two reports at one time and it seems that BOINC is not connected. However I am a bit further. I will work on it tomorrow (or overnight) as I now go and watch the WC Sprint. I keep you updated Greetings from, TJ |

If you mean that you get the message "BOINC Manager cannot connect to a client", then first check if boinc.exe is actually running. Do so in Windows Task Manager. If you don't see it running under your own name, do "Show processes from all users" first. When boinc.exe is running, it may just have its 'chat-channel' blocked by your firewall software. Since you complete newly installed BOINC, you may want to allow boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe through your firewall again. If it needs a port number, TCP 31416. Boinc.exe needs access to the internet on TCP ports 80 and 443. |

The firewall was not an issue, I checked and boinc.exe was running too. So I did a reinstall again and checked the register. I deleted all files connected with BOINC, even the data folder. Then I powered down the pc instead of rebooting it. During an ice preparation I powered it up and installed a new version of BOINC 6.10.60 and booted it again. Then BOINC started automatically without errors and I added my projects again and the pc is now hapily crunching. I have to wait for some time if to see if the uploading of Rosetta and returning ready WU's to Einstein will work. Thank you guys for all the useful help and suggestions. I am happy again and glad not to do a complete system set up again. Thanks. Greetings from, TJ |
