Hi, There is a growing number of Android phones/devices out there in the wild, and having a BOINC port for Android (Boincoid) would allow the BOINC community to tap on this vast computing power. The idea is for the Boincoid users to switch on the processing at night, when their Android phone/device is charging and idle. Please reply to this thread if you pledge to try Boincoid on your Android phone/device once the port is ready*. You can specify your phone model and MFLOPS** details if you know them. For more details: http://boincoid.sourceforge.net/faq.html ** You can use Linpack for Android or similar benchmarking tools to calculate your Android phone/gadget's MFLOPS value. ** If you want to help porting BOINC to Android, contact us at http://boincoid.sourceforge.net/contact.html |

This post by a WCG tech, last paragraph, may be of interest.... kind of "not now but we're watching it closely". https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,30185_offset,120#354845 --//-- |

I already fried two phones running BOINC apps on it. They are not designed to dissipate the heat they generate when running CPU intense apps for several hours. Nor are they a vast resource just because they are so numerous. The fact is they take a long, long time to crunch a task. You pay the price of a new phone and in return receive a paltry number of tasks. After the first phone fried I got a second, disassembled it and drilled numerous tiny holes (.037" diameter) through the case to help dissipate heat by increasing air flow. Didn't work, phone fried anyway. I think some electrically conductive debris worked its way through the holes I drilled and shorted something inside. I took it apart and cleaned it with compressed air but it's dead. I would like to see the phone idea work but it hasn't so far for me in spite of 2 tries and now I'm out of ideas. I'll offer you this deal... I'll take the pledge if you pledge to buy me a new phone when this one fries from overheating. It takes time to fry but they do eventually. "Windows" -- an American English word, meaning "A real operating system is too hard for me." |

Nice list, Russell :) - I pledged to run BOINC on anything (ideally everything) in my house long ago. If I can be bothered to run Pentium IIIs and PowerMac (ppc) G4s, I may as well run something modern but beta. Currently limited to my VZW HTC Droid DNA. It's got a 1,5GHz quad-core and running NativeBOINC 24/7 (plugged in, of course) I barely notice any performance issue... Example stats... I highly recommend NativeBOINC as it eliminates about 99% of the guesswork that can go into running a beta app - or in the case of BOINC, anything not yet officially supported. It's even in the app store. Of course, if you find other platforms easier to use or whatever, go ahead - the credits are the same. NativeBOINC comes bundled with Android-ported apps for some projects ready to go anyway, which is good for me because I have enough programming projects going at once... I pledge to get BOINC running on my toaster, Macintosh LC II, and TI-84 graphing calculator within the next year! ;) |
