I use my laptop to connect to several boxes running BOINC clients. How can I store their (long) passwords strings locally on my laptop so that BOINC Manager looks them up for me?

I think you can't. Alternativ you can change the long password at the client side (it's in the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg) or use BoincView as a replacement for BOINC Manager.
