What is the program looking for in the "Select Computer" and "Password" fields, I have tried tiger-x86.local, lo calhost and my Long User Name and short user name with the appropriate passwords but it will not connect?

Navigate to your Boinc directory.
Find the file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg, open it up with a word processor and delete password, then put a blank space followed by a carriage return, save file.
Then restart BOINC.
That will most probably fix it.

Just to put you in the picture:
It's looking for the name(s) and password(s) of the other computer(s) in your collection.
If you only have one computer, then the trick is to leave both fields blank.
At least, the first time that you try it. Now that you have, and failed, you'll have to follow Jim's advice.

never mind - i just did a complete re-install, and it picked it up first time.
weird that this never happened originally, but just glad to have got it working.
thanks for your time anyway.
