Trying to run an updated BOINC client under OSX Lion (10.7.1) and after an install I get the following error: You currently are not authorized to manage the client. ![]() Any ideas? Looking at the Data file locations it seems I am not in the boinc_master users group - is this a known installer issue? regards, -David |

Did you try the advice given, to reinstall BOINC? As that normally fixes the missing permissions. Else see Wiki: Selecting which users may run BOINC Manager |

Still rooting around to a fix for this. Yes I tried (multiple) times to re-install - same issues. I even got into dscl to check my group membership: /Local/Default/Groups > cat boinc_master AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default GeneratedUID: B529125C-D244-4F68-B54B-F0383F5F9B11 GroupMembership: dcappello dcappello dcappello PrimaryGroupID: 101 RecordName: boinc_master RecordType: dsRecTypeStandard:Groups /Local/Default/Groups > exit Goodbye I am in there so I should be good to go - but I am not. |

So I did even MORE research and what I found out was that my userid was NOT in the boinc_master group I confirmed this by running dscl localhost and then /Local/Default/Groups then I did a cat on boinc_master What is strange is that group membership showed dcappello NOT cappello (cappello is my userid) So I added cappello to boinc_master with the command append boinc_master GroupMembership cappello this fixed my problem. The issue is that the installer seems to be picking up dcappello as my user ID which is not correct. back on the air! |

What is strange is that group membership showed dcappello NOT cappello (cappello is my userid) This is odd. Other people have had similar problems, so I would like to track this down. OS X sometimes has 2 versions of the user name; one for external use and one for internal. For example, your external name might be John Smith but your internal name would then be johnsmith (all lower case and no spaces.) The external name is typically shown in the Users and Groups pane of the System preferences, while the internal name is typically shown in the /Users directory. Might this somehow explain the discrepancy? Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

I am also having trouble installing BOINC 6.10.58 under Lion (10.7.1) on a MacPro5,1. The installer created two users but failed to create the groups. A retry also failed and I've wasted too much time. Are there instructions for a manual install? |

I am also having trouble installing BOINC 6.10.58 under Lion (10.7.1) on a MacPro5,1. The installer created two users but failed to create the groups. BOINC 6.10.58 is obsolete and may not work under Lion. Please install the current recommended version for Macintosh, BOINC 6.12.35. You can get it here. Retried using 6.12.35 with identical results. Failure is so malicious that crucial applications are disabled. I am reminded of why I ceased participation years ago. |

Retried using 6.12.35 with identical results. Failure is so malicious that crucial applications are disabled. That's very disturbing. This is the first report I've heard of this. Please explain what applications are disabled. Thanks in advance for your help. Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

I'll throw a 'me too' out here as I am having the same issue. Running OSX 10.6.8 and trying to install 6.12.35 universal. I noticed that it's stated in the readme; " As of BOINC 6.8.29 / BOINC 6.10.5, the BOINC installer asks whether or not you wish to allow this." I cannot see where this option is offered during the install. I have reinstalled, deleted the application plist and have just now started to look at the user/groups. Here is the installer log: Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: @(#)PROGRAM:Install PROJECT:Install-596.1 Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: @(#)PROGRAM:Installer PROJECT:Installer-430.1 Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Hardware: Macmini2,1 @ 1.83 GHz (x 2), 2048 MB RAM Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Running OS Build: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: TMPDIR=/var/folders/KX/KXWoIp5XE948H7bkNFmBq++++TI/-Tmp-/ Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: SHELL=/bin/bash Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: HOME=/Volumes/Media/ballcapbob Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: USER=ballcapbob Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: LOGNAME=ballcapbob Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: GL_ENABLE_DEBUG_ATTACH=YES Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-YDhJ6d/org.x:0 Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/launch-mrT0UI/Listeners Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: Apple_PubSub_Socket_Render=/tmp/launch-Y2SjOP/Render Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: COMMAND_MODE=unix2003 Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Env: __CF_USER_TEXT_ENCODING=0x1F5:0:0 Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: BOINC Manager Installation Log Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: Opened from: /Volumes/Media/ballcapbob/Desktop/boinc_6.12.35_macOSX_universal/boinc_6.12.35_macOSX_universal/BOINC Installer.pkg Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: fileURLForURL = x-disc://Media/ballcapbob/Desktop/boinc_6.12.35_macOSX_universal/boinc_6.12.35_macOSX_universal/BOINC%20Installer.pkg Sep 20 13:56:38 Mac-mini Installer[7884]: fileURLForURL = file://localhost/Volumes/Media/ballcapbob/Desktop/boinc_6.12.35_macOSX_universal/boinc_6.12.35_macOSX_universal/BOINC%20Installer.pkg Thanks, Bruticus I am who I am today. OK, found that I was not added as a user to either _master or _project groups. The Logs did not indicate any problems with the install or post install so I cannot give a specific reason as to why this happened (or didn't happen). To fix this, I did the following; Open a Terminal and type: sudo dscl <Enter> Enter your password <Enter> cd /Local/Default/Groups <Enter> append boinc_master GroupMembership 'your user name' <Enter> exit <Enter> Use the 'non' pretty version of your username. The all lowercase one like this: yourusername. Not 'You User Name' or alias. Hope this helps. It's been working like a champ ever since and everything seems to be enabled. Hope this helps. It's been working like a champ ever since and everything seems to be enabled. Unfortunately, that does not add any new information I did not already know. I need to know why the installer did not add you to the groups. I assume your user ballcapbob is a member of the admin group. If it isn't you should have seen a dialog asking whether you want non-admin users to be able to run BOINC. The installer log you sent me does not have any of the debugging information I need. It would be a grew help if you could run the uninstaller to remove the boinc users and groups, then run the installer again, but please show the log and select "Show All Logs", then save the log file before closing the installer. If it is too long to paste into a regular post, send it to me in a private message. This would be a tremendous help in finding the reason for this problem which a number of people have reported but I cannot reproduce. I've been trying to find the problem for months, but I haven't been able to get the information I need to do so. Thank you in advance for your help. Alright, let me get this straight (I can be rather dense). You want me to: 1. Remove Boinc 2. Remove Groups _master and _project 3. Re-install Boinc and capture the installer log start to finish 4. Report back Yes? OK, will do. I'll get back to you when I'm done. I am who I am today. Yesterday I was somebody else. Tomorrow I will be somebody new. |

Alright, let me get this straight (I can be rather dense). You want me to: Yes, please, exactly as you say. And don't worry, the Uninstall BOINC application won't remove any of your data. Be sure to select "Show All Logs" and save the installer log to a file before closing the installer. Thanks in advance! Same problem here... (runing Lion as well) Would you be kind enough to try BOINC 6.13.8, available here, and let me know if that helps. It has a new version of the installer which I hope will address this issue. IMPORTANT: Please make a copy of your /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data directory before running this installer. This version of BOINC changes the format of your data, so if you later wish to revert to an earlier version of BOINC, you may lose any unreported work. In that case, you can go back to the saved copy off your data. Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

THANK YOU!! Been pulling my hair out since I updated to Lion 10.7.2 the other day. Every time I logged out, I was having to reinstall 6.12.35 Just installed 6.13.10, and logged out and back in a few times and it seems to be working properly. I was dangerously close to giving up. Someone might make a note on the download page, or try to push 6.13.x to stable asap, because 6.12.35 is definitely not cutting it under 10.7.2 |
