I have a Windows 7 box with a GeForce GT 9800 GPU. I was running BOINC with GPUGRID since May without problems.

Today, I uninstalled and reinstaled BOINC (latest version), and specified to run BOINC as a service. Since then, BOINC cannot find my GPU, and gives me the usual "no usable GPUs found" message in the activity log.

I tried updating my GPU drivers to the latest version (280.26), just in-case, but it didn't help.

What's going on?

You probably did a 'protected application execution' install, uninstall Boinc, and reinstall without that option ticked,

Not with windows 7. XP was the last windows version to support GPUs with PAE (service mode).

I'm surprised, because the thread I found mentions delaying starting the service in W7. But the FAQ clears this up pretty well.
