I realize the intent was for laptops, but if I have a desktop attached to a UPS and the UPS is recognized by the O/S, so the O/S shows on battery if the mains fail, will BOINC see a power fail and suspend crunching? Anyone know? ![]() |

try it, turn off the mains at the wall and see what happens. CIC1=CC=C(C2=N[C@@H](CC(OC(C)(C)C)=O)C3=NN=C(C)N3C4=C2C(C)=C(C)S4)C=C1 |

try it, turn off the mains at the wall and see what happens. The outlet I have it connected to isn't switched and the manufacturer of the UPS says not to unplug it to test it. I think I know why they make that recommendation and would agree with it 100%. ![]() |

try it, turn off the mains at the wall and see what happens. Turn it off at the switchboard then. CIC1=CC=C(C2=N[C@@H](CC(OC(C)(C)C)=O)C3=NN=C(C)N3C4=C2C(C)=C(C)S4)C=C1 |

Well, what do you want of them then? You're not allowed to pull the plug as that could damage something and lose your warranty, but you do want to test whether this preference runs on your UPS? I can tell you, of course not. A UPS is not there to keep your system running while the power is out. A UPS is there to allow you to power down the electrical equipment attached to it in a normal fashion, when the power is out, and to protect against power spikes, sags and surges. |

Well, what do you want of them then? You're not allowed to pull the plug as that could damage something and lose your warranty, but you do want to test whether this preference runs on your UPS? MY UPS? No, I didn't ask about MY UPS. I asked in general. If someone perhaps knew if the methods BOINC uses to determine if it is on battery apply only to laptops or if they apply also to desktops on UPS. Something someone who worked on that section of the code might know. If it depends on the O/S then point me to man pages. I'm not necessarily expecting the answer will be the same for Linux/Windows/Mac OS ... ![]() |

What's wrong with the advice to flip the breaker off? It works the same as a standard switch on the receptacle. Nothing wrong with throwing a toaster in a bucket of water either. I've done it many times to make sure I get the right breaker first time. There's no danger of being electrocuted and the toaster is fine after it drys out. I live in a 2 story house, the breaker box is in the basement, computers are on the top floor. Either I run up and down the stairs several times until I get the right breaker, yell upstairs to Honey to ask her if I've tripped the right breaker (I can't yell that loud) or just drop the toaster in some water. I like the last option, I'm lazy. Wow, all those words and zero information content. You could be a politician. While you grew older and brain cells atrophied, UPS manufacturers standardized communications http://www.networkupstools.org/ups-protocols.html How about you just be quiet since you obviously don't know the answer, and we'll see if someone who has worked on the BONIC code wonders by and knows the answer to the question in the first post. But since you have screwed the thread up I doubt that will happen now. Proud of yourself? ![]() |

And it's BOINC, not BONIC. And it's "wander by", not "wonder by" ;-) |

OK, that went far enough. I'm not sure what everyone in this thread ate, drank, sniffed or got through osmosis, but you better stop it. Obscene & Flame/Hate mail. Wow. Well, whatever. Locked. |
