the other day, all of my work on various projects disappeared. when i try to assign a new project, i am told to connect to local host. when i type "localhost" for host name, an automated password appears. after pressing connect, i get a message display of 'cannot connect". am i doing something wrong here. also, i have already removed the program and reinstalled it and im still getting the same messages. |

In the menu, under File, click on Select computer. Then click OK without anything in the 2 fields. |

I general I'm not a fan of "me too" posts, but "me too" - sort of. I just attempted to do a windows update on my system. After a reboot, boincmgr can't connect to a local client "BOINC manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. Would you like to try again". If I select a remote computer (either of my 2 other machines, both of which run Linux), it works fine, but I cannot figure out how to get a client started on my windoze machine. It used to work fine. I've tried connecting with both fields blank and with just the password blank. I've tried rebooting a couple of times. I've run out of things to try... Help! I need to find ET :-) |

FWIW, I'm in the same boat. BOINC stopped working with the dreaded "no connection" message. I have reinstalled both the current Windoze versions and the previous version. I get a different message with the older version, but, it means the same - cannot connect. Reboots, password resets, blah, blah... no joy!! Another machine works just fine - same Windoze, same BOINC, same connection, same projects. I guess I will get to use the "POWER OFF" switch for the first time in a long time!! |

OK, admittedly, I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree and I was about ready to throw in the towel on this one!! A major breakthrough occurred this afternoon!!! I still have no idea what is really going on, but, here's what I did to finally get back up and running. * Uninstalled BOINC using the Control Panel. * Deleted the BOINC directory and all files and subdirs from the Program Files directory. * Cold booted my machine. * Reinstalled BOINC. Everything took right off!!! BOINC walked me through reconnecting with my projects and all seems well in River City once again!!! I'm so happy I'm giving myself the rest of the day off! I sure hope this helps others who were as frustrated as I was. Retrodude |

A while ago I used the old SETIatHome, that always worked perfectly for me. Now that I downloaded Boinc I must say it's all disappoinments I have: SETI doesn't want to run and after adding two other projects that seemed to work everything is stopped now and Boinc is idle. There's no way to get it running again: I tried everything in the preferences there is to do, but Boinc is suspended and there's nothing I can do about it. What on earth is going on here? |

My trouble started yesterday when I tried to upgrade to an optimized client (Crunch3r). Now, that I look back at it, I bungled the upgrade and everything went downhill from there until the great epiphany (see previous post). Thinking I'm pretty darned smart after all (I did get BOINC running again), I decided to try the optimized client upgrade again this afternoon. This time, I did it correctly. The time required for a typical WU prior to the optimization was 2.5 hours. The optimized client has only been running a little over an hour now, but, it looks like my WU time will come in at less than one hour!! Now, I'm even happier than I was earlier when I got BOINC back up. Suyderman - What do you mean by "BOINC is suspended"? I don't think BOINC can be suspended. You can suspend projects within BOINC. Do you mean BOINC mgr runs, but, projects do not? Do you get the "cannot connect" error? Retrodude |

I've had all sorts of trouble with XP, and started a thred on that. I just received the connection error problem, and got this to work: I opened gui_rpc_auth.cfg with notepad, deleted everything, closed Boinc Manager, and re-opened. It worked. ( I had seen one post saying to put one space and a carriage return in gui_rpc_auth.cfg, but that did not work for me. It's also important for it to be a .cfg file, not text) |
