I cannot add any new projects using v5.1.3. I've tried with SZTAKI, Primegrid (before it went down), and Einstein.

I go through the attach to new project wizard. It asks me for the URL of the project. I enter it and push next, it says that it is communicating with the project, but then comes back with a message stating that the URL is not a BOINC project, check the URL and try again.

SZTAKI won't be helpful as they still use the version 4 code on their server, so you won't be able to get new work.

Seti, Seti Beta and Einstein are currently the only ones that ought to be able to connect. Well, maybe Shoft@Home and Orbit@Home as well. \

Anyway, that to the side.
When you enter the Attach wizard, what do you choose? Use an existing account or make a new one? Or don't you even get that far? Have you checked for the ever popular spaces before or after the link?

Hi Jim,
nice to see you here ;-) Or less nice if I take in consideration that something's wrong...
I've had the same problem also with the 'old' v4.72 just on one host, too.
I couldn't re-attach to my other projects when PrimeGrid went down. I got the same message with the wrong URL...
Now I've tried the new v5.1.3 and at least managed to get back to Einstein, but all my other accounts seem to be unavailable :(
Lovely greetings, Cori

I just attached to Boinc Alpha without a problem, as a test.

Reading Cori's answer... have either of you tried to detach from Primegrid, make an update of your preferences through any other project you are attached to and see if that helps?

I forgot BOINC Alpha... oops that works, too! :-)
For PrimeGrid-detaching: at first I didn't want to do it because of loss of the WUs already done but not uploaded, but in the end I "killed" PrimeGrid on that host. I also changed the "connect to network in xx days" several times for testing purpose. What really makes me wonder is the fact that this error occured under the v4.72 wich seemed to be stable before even as a dev-version. AND I use the same version on my second host where NO problems did arise. Both are pc's with hyperthreading working with win xp. They are both connected to network with the same dsl-router; I can't figure out what makes the one host run into problems with attaching while the other one is running smoothly.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I de-installed and re-installed BOINC several times. When I did this, another error was "Couldn't fetch master file", but I knew that the schedulers (for example LHC) were available at that time. And the project detached automatically...
Lovely greetings, Cori

Okay, I have done some searching. Any project that hasn't updated its server data in the past month orso, won't recognize the 5.x client.

You need a 4.x client for that. I think this includes the Boinc Attach wizard.

Yes I know that many projects don't support v5.xx yet, but my problems started when using v4.72 (without Attach Wizard), so what can I do? I guess this is a problem which affects more than only the 5.xx versions. Today I even tried a downgrade to 4.25, but the outcome is the same: I cant't re-attach to most of my projects, because either I get the "wrong URL" message or the "master file fetch failed" error. When jumping between the different versions I also cleaned the whole BOINC directory on C, too. Just to make sure I'll start from scratch. Now I have really no more ideas left ;-)

Cori, did you ever reboot inbetween uninstalls/reinstalls? In case you installed as a service?

For everything above 4.19 allows installation as a service. Yet by uninstalling Boinc, you will not stop the service until you reboot!

Well, maybe Shoft@Home and Orbit@Home as well.

Shoft@Home does work, and apparently Orbit@Home. I'm running Windows, so there is no .exe from Orbit yet, but the scheduler doesn't give me the "You are running version 5..." message.

Orbit@Home is doing Linux clients first, Heffed. Read this thread if you haven't. :(

I didn't reboot, because I used single-user mode for install...

Okay, then I have something to work with.

The OSes on all your computers are what?
Are all computers running the same client?
Which one(s)?

Has anything taken over ports 80, 1043 and 31416 as far as you can see?

Both pc's are running win xp, both have hyperthreading processors, both were running v4.72 when the problems first occured. Now the 'bad' one runs the 5.1.3 with Einstein & BOINC alpha. Both are connected to network with LAN (dsl-router). I'll have a look at the ports...
Edit: I'm not sure, but my firewall settings should grant access, as I've not been changing them, hmm...

Thanks Ageless. Yes, I'm aware of that, which is why I quantified my response to include the fact that I'm running Windows so I can't test full functionality of the project. Simply that the CC appears to be talking to the scheduler. ;)

I'm running 4.72 and have attached to nearly everything but crashcollection @ resource management. the wizard gives a error box complaining about the account key for both projects. error messages in the log for rm say "temporarily shut down for maint" and detaches. cc say "failed with a return value" of 500.

I know what the 500 error is, so i'm assuming the server code/software hasn't been updated to allow versions higher than 4.4x at those sites. Am I correct here?

I would have posted this under the "4.72" thread, but there seems to be more discussion about the download page and bookmarks there.

James :-)

It's been a while since I checked this thread. Sorry. Jord, to answer your question, I don't get that far.

I guess I'll have to wait until I get a chance to attach to another V5.x project.

Can you do me a favor? Open up Task Manager and check how many instances of boinc.exe are running with 5.1.3 installed?

Can you then exit Boinc completely, go to your Boinc folder and check in the properties of the Boinc.exe and the boincmgr.exe what version number they have?

I am asking this, as I can do the same thing with boinc.exe 4.72 and boinc manager 5.1.3 ... have the same error message. So it sounds as if you have an older boinc.exe running with a newer manager.

I just check task manager:
boinc.exe
boincmgr.exe

I also just checked all the version numbers and they are all 5.1.3

Next suggestion?

How did you install it? Over an older version or do you uninstall old version then install the new ones?

Do you install the separate symbols file? (you can get that one from here. Unzip in your main Boinc folder.)

Okay, so here is a quick set of tests for you all.

The wizard depends on some xml returned from the project. You can see the xml by calling up:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php

Like wise you can go to the alpha project's config file:
http://isaac.ssl.berkeley.edu/alpha/get_project_config.php

And out current account creation dummy project:
http://isaac.ssl.berkeley.edu/cplan/get_project_config.php

Basically if the get_project_config.php page cannot be found, the wizard assumes that it is not a BOINC based project.

We are working with the various projects to get them upgraded to the latest server version, and we have provided a backwards compatible method for projects that cannot upgrade there server software before we release. It looks as though most projects still haven't even done that.
