Greetings! First a basic question.. If auto-start of the boinc-client is not selected on install, how does the boinc-manager start the boinc-client? Why I ask: I have been running BOINC on windows and Debian Linux and just started to try Ubuntu Linux. With Ubuntu, I used the desktop tools to install BOINC and it started up without a hitch. Great! I had been crunching away for a few days and did a system update. Then, when I started the boinc-manager it failed to connect on the localhost. I did a ps -ef, sure enough, no boinc-client running. SHORT-TERM FIX: I did a sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start That did OK - the client started... Then a restart of boinc-manager. Boinc-manager started ok and connected OK... Hence the question.... Doesn't boinc-manager kick-start the boinc-client if the boinc-client was not previously running?? Any ideas? I was suspecting a permissions problem or, perhaps something to do with the update.. Maybe timing, this is an older PC.... Suggestions?? Advice?? Idle Chatter?? Thanks in advance.... Jay |

G'day jay same thing here on a debian 5 box using boinc 6.2.14 from the deb repositories. tried changing ownership of all boinc files to my user, but that didn't help. CIC1=CC=C(C2=N[C@@H](CC(OC(C)(C)C)=O)C3=NN=C(C)N3C4=C2C(C)=C(C)S4)C=C1 |

First. I believe, that this place is right direction for questions, curse, beg for help, etc. about debian (and derivates(sic!)) way to package boinc. Point. Then. One hint. Check if this grep ENABLED /etc/default/boinc-client outputs that ENABLED="1" If not then change that approprately. If it does then the problem is elsewhere in filesystem, configuration files, and/or operating system. Any issue has to be directed elsewhere because it has nothing to do with boinc itself. I observe that there were attempts to maintain owner and permissions manually. You understand that your boinc isn't going to start automatically any more, don't you? Debian has its own way to setup things. Your installation has owner and permissions set up correctly from the beginning. Now it's broken. Congratulations. p.s. There's no will to learn anymore. We all gonna die. I'm counting for science, points just make me sick. |

Greetings Why-not!! I did post in the Ubuntu forum. A reply said to ask in the BOINC forum. ( Did you see that coming? :-) ) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1681026 Thanks to Trog Dog - who confirmed a similar problem. About /etc/default/boinc-client I did try out the change. Thank you! But there was no effect. Boinc-client did not start (There was work to do.) I didn't want boinc-client to start at boot up. I preferred it to start only after I started boinc-manager. But it was worth the try to see what would happen About permissions.. I did not and have not changed permissions. I did look at them and they looked OK. My PC environment has two users as well as the 'boinc' user that was created as part of the install. Booting and logging in as either user shows the same problem. So... Congratulations? I'm sharing a problem. If there is a fix I will share it; write a bug report and share the solution. My next plan is to do a backup onto USB; reinstall boinc (and boinc-client and boinc-manager) once the WU completes; do diffs to see what changed and snoop around... Meanwhile, I'm still open for suggestions.... Hello World. Thanks, Jay |

Hi Jord, Boinc-Manager version was 6.10.58. I did a remove and reinstall with the Ubuntu Software Center and the problem was fixed - without losing data. I copied off /etc /usr /var and /home before I did the update and did diff -r to see of any changes stood out. Nothing stood out. Jay PS I had wiped the disk and started with a fresh install of Ubuntu in January. |
