I've just upgraded to 5.3.23 from 5.3.12.tx.34 (TruXoft's version).

I have BOINC set to "run based on preferences" (run after 2 minutes of inactivity), however even after this time BOINC still says "Suspending network activity - user is active". ZoneAlarm indicates there is some constant traffic (I think in both directions) however my ADSL modem lights remain quiet. I tried removing the entries in ZoneAlarm for BOINC Client and BOINC Manager for Windows and letting it re-add them.

If I set BOINC to "run always" everything works as it should, except for the flashing lights on the ZoneAlarm icon.

I have tried going to Add/Remove Programs/Uninstall & reinstalling but no luck.

I'd really prefer to have BOINC running applications only when the computer is not busy.

Any ideas?

Did you do a project update after changing your account preference? Changes to the preference setting don't take effect until you do so.

As for ZA, the traffic it is reporting is boincmgr.exe talking to boinc.exe using 127.0.0.1 (localhost) on ports 1043 and 31416. If you set localhost as a safe zone it might ignore that traffic (just a guess, I don't use ZA).

I didn't change the preferences on the web site, just used the activity menu.

127.0.0.1 is already setup on ZoneAlarm as a trusted zone. It hasn't done it on previous versions, I only noticed it flashing away after the update.

OK except BOINC won't work when set to "run based on preferences"...:-(. I'm not always active but BOINC thinks I am. It won't do any calculations unless set to "run always".

According to the BOINCZilla comments, the bug is also present in 5.3.22 & 5.3.24. It's now been found by 2 other people on BOINCZilla.

Walt G at Berkeley has put a fix in for this bug. It will appear in 5.3.29.

This problem is still observed on version 5.3.31. I also use the ZoneAlarm software and I observe continuous input traffic at level 2kbytes per second. This problem is observed since version 5.3.18 of Boinc Manager.

I hope these are two separate things in this thread:

- I installed the 5.3.31 version today on two hosts to confirm that the user inactivity issue is really solved,
- since version I-do-not-know (maybe the 5.3.18, I noticed it on 5.3.27) Boinc Manager communicates with the Boinc Core Client (nearly) continuously or at least each secont. In the 5.2.X series it was still something like "once in a four seconds". You can see it e.g. in the manager, all numbers are updated each second there.

What (positively) bugs me: Boinc Manager consumes virtually no CPU time (or by magnitudes less) compared to BoincView...

Probably you are right that these are to separate problems. I've checked it again and found that there is no outside transfer from/to Boinc Manager. There is only continuous communication between Boinc Manager and as you said Boinc Core Client. But it is still observed. It is indicated by ZoneAlarm as internet activity. And this is very frustrating.

Zonealarm is probably not differentiating between inTERnet and inTRAnet activity.

Not exactly. This problem was not observed on older versions of Boinc Manager.

Older versions as in BOINC pre 4.45? That was because at that time, the GUI and the client were one program. Since 4.45, they are separate. And they communicate with eachother. On TCP port 1043, if that one is taken, tcp 31416. The next upcoming BOINC only communicates on 31416.
