Windows 2000 Pro SP4
BOINC Manager 4.25

I have a number of projects installed.

Climate is running well
SETI is running (when it can get WU's!)
Protein is running well

LHC, Einstein are sitting doing nothing!
BOINC Mgr shows WU's are Status 'Ready to run'
but CPU Time is '---' and progress is '0.00%'
over a number of days.

I have tried everything I can think of ...
... including detaching and reattaching to project ...
but the WU's just sit there.

Can anyone explain this and/or make suggestions ...
... to get them going again?

Regards,

Brian

If you detach from a project all WUs are lost for that project, so if you have some listed they are not going to do anything....or did the project download some more WUs after you reattached?

You need to post any error messages that you get.....

Windows 2000 Pro SP4
BOINC Manager 4.25

Current BOINC is 4.45, with 4.72/5.x in beta - there were definitely problems in 4.25, I believe they even "fell back" to 4.19 until 4.45 came out...

Detaching and reattaching in the Projects tab may have made any further fix impossible... but if these are still in your Work tab, I would select everything ELSE that is there (all but LHC and Einstein WUs) and hit "Suspend". One of those "ready to run" should start running. If it is past deadline, I'd abort it, otherwise let it run and unsuspend others after a few hours. If it does not run, it's beyond help, I'd select it and hit "Abort". Then return to the Projects tab and hit "Update" for both LHC and Einstein. Check back in Work tab and see if the hung units are gone. If and ONLY if nothing else works, I would "no new work" ALL projects, let it run until your CPU goes idle, and then "Reset" LHC and Einstein. If you don't get running WUs at that point, it's time to uninstall what you have completely and install the current version, then attach to each project again.

What is your Resource Share for the projects? Are you getting any errors in the Messages tab? Have you tried (or can you?) BOINC View, or BOINC DV?

I have upgraded to BOINC 4.45 but still have the same problem.
I have installed BOINC View. Nice program!
I havn't seen any error messages but have been experimenting.

If I suspend the projects WU's that have progress > 0% then those that were 'stuck' run! The suspended WU's can then be resumed!

Is there a routine in BOINC mgr that restricts either ...
... the number of projects a machine can run?
... the number of WU's a machine can run?

Is BOINC mgr 'intelligent' enough to recognise impending deadlines ...
... and weight wu's for more processing?
... 'hold' WU's with long deadlines?

Perhaps deadlines can be relaxed to cope with users running multiple projects especially as more worthwhile projects come online.

I think you are calling WUs that are "ready to run" stuck - they aren't stuck, they're ready to run, and will be run when BOINC Manager gets to them... they are "stuck" only if they are in "ready to run" state and there is NOTHING else running.

Over time, no - at any given moment, yes, only one WU on one project can be run per CPU. Only one WU per project will be either "running" or "paused/preempted" at a time, with any others waiting in the queue "ready to run". Depending on deadlines, etc., there may be fewer than one per project in this state. The Manager is pretty intelligent.

Yes. Yes. And Yes. There's no need to relax the deadlines, as long as participants do not attempt to "override" BOINC and download more work than their machine can handle. (By setting "connect to every" to more than 1/n * shortest deadline, where n = number of projects attached.) As the default "connect to" is 0.1, this is generally not a problem. The manager will shuffle everything quite nicely, and deadlines will not be missed.

The "weighting" is based on the Resource Share you set in the project's preferences, but is continuously adjusted based on how much work has been given to other projects, deadlines, etc.

There is a ton of info in the Wiki about all of this; http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/
