I've recently started running BOINC on my server, a dual quad-core Xeon Dell box running Windows Home Server (effectively Server 2003).

When I set the max CPU usage to 50%, the cpu usage fluctuates drasticly. When I logged on just now, it was at 99%, 1%, 99%, 1%, 99%, 1%, 99%, 1%.

I don't really want that, and would prefer it to run at a stable value of 50% (or whatever I select).
Any ideas appreciated.

That option works by running BOINC 50% of the time.
I think that it's 1 second on, 1 second off.

Also, I seem to remember reading that the work for some projects don't like that sort of thing, and will crash.

Are you running it like this because of heat?
If so perhaps TThrotle will help.

Suggest to get ahold of ThreadMaster GUI. Works well on servers and allows by-process, by science control on W2K, XP through Windows 7 - 64 bit... very smooth. Set the threshold on an 8 core to about 6.25% and that will translate to effective 50% per core.

Thanks, Threadmaster GUI has done the trick. Need to read up on it a bit, as I'm not quite using as much of the CPU as I'd like, but at least it's more where I want it to be.

Great, ... I'm sure you've figured that BOINC itself should be set back to use 100% else the 2 throttle controls will be working against each other.

Perhaps it's really no good idea to run a BOINC project on a web server. ;-)

I am running S@H and MilkyWay@H on a E4700 dual core CPU at 2.6GHz on an Acer M1640 operating on Windows Vista sp2.

Using System Monitor 2 I have noticed a regular cycling of both cores from 100% down to about 60%. I am not sure if this is a normal part of the computation process or whether it reveals some malfunction. This results in my CPU time being appreciably less than the calculation time and looks somewhat inefficient.

I have only been using BOINC for about 11 months so I am not sure about this and I would appreciate any help offered. As it occurs on both cores no matter which task is running I have posted here and not on the respective message boards.
