I am trying to run BOINC on OS X 10.5.8 as a screensaver. Actually I have never had a problem with it until a couple of days ago. Now when the screensaver runs, all I see is BOINC not running message, and when I connect via the manager I get a dialog box saying "boinc manager connection failed". I have tried reinstalling BOINC a couple of type with no improvement. Doesn't anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Stan |

Just curious if people needed anymore information, or if there was any news on this bug. Thanks Stan |

If this helps I cannot seem to connect to the client via the manager using the advanced menu's 'select computer'. I have tried both 'localhost' and the name of my computer. |

Mac computers are sufficiently different to Windows/Linux machines, that I don't know enough to help specifically. I know from reading the version notes, that versions of BOINC before the one that you're using had a few problems. I was hoping that a Mac person what offer some help, but here goes: The problem that you have is quite common. With Windows, sometimes a Windows program will take over port 31416; sometimes the AV program will block the traffic on this port. As this is where/how the 2 parts of BOINC communicate, the manager is left wondering what the work part is doing. And so is the user. I haven't seen this problem for several years, but 'back then', the advice was to use 'select computer', leave both fields blank, and just click OK. Or re-boot and hope. |

Is the 'work part' still running when the manager can't connect? If not, did you check the various log files in the BOINC data directory? Gruß, Gundolf |

I didn't find a particular log file. but there is one named stdoutdae.txt that seem to have the following errors listed in it. File ownership or permissions are set in a way that does not allow sandboxed execution of BOINC applications. To use BOINC anyway, use the -insecure command line option. To change ownership/permission, reinstall BOINC or run the shell script Mac_SA_Secure.sh. (Error code -1004) [repeat last two lines on an on]. |

The first thing to try on the Mac whenever BOINC reports a permissions problem is to run the BOINC Manager installer again. This will usually fix the permissions. You should then run BOINC via the Manager to make sure it is working. If it doesn't fix the permissions, read this article on how to fix them. When you say "I am trying to run BOINC as a screensaver" it's not clear if you just mean that you want the screensaver to work or if you mean that you want BOINC to compute only when the screensaver is running. Once you have established it is working from the Manager, if you really want BOINC to run _only_ from the screensaver, you will then need to prevent the Manager from starting up automatically, as described in this article. If BOINC is not running when the screensaver starts, it will launch the BOINC Client, and BOINC will exit when the screensaver is dismissed due to user activity. (This works on the Mac only. It won't work this way on Linux or Windows; if it gives anyone ideas). Alternatively, you could follow the instructions in the error message and run the shell script Mac_SA_Secure.sh, which is supplied with the command-line version of BOINC. But for the screensaver to launch the client, the BOINC Manager must be installed in the standard place (the /Applications directory.) The BOINC Manager has a copy of the BOINC Client embedded in its bundle, and that is where the screensaver expects to find the BOINC Client. |
