For the past month Boinc has been locking up my PC and filling the hard drive with errors in the stdoutgui.old file. Currently its over 250MB after just 5 days.

The entries are:

And then the error 1816 errors just repeat thousands of times until the system just stops responding and I have to do a hard reset.

This is Windows XP SP3
E2180 @ 2Ghz dual CPU
No GPU
1GB RAM

Bonic Version 6.10.56
wxWidgets Version: 2.8.10

Aside from APC PowerChute UPS software and MicroSoft Security Essentials, that is all I run on this machine.

Is this a stand-alone primary desktop machine, or are you installing onto some sort of network domain server?

I'd never tolerate what you describe for 5 minutes; my system would be crunching the orginal data - with the orginal host client version - after that.

Furthermore, the error messages seem to imply that BOINC is executing on a virtual box.

It's a stand alone desktop machine and not a virtual server and not a network domain server. Just straight windows xp sp3.

The Boinc version was downloaded right off this web site. I've even uninstalled, downloaded a new install, and reinstalled Boinc.

I have been running Boinc on this box for a couple of years now and this is the first time I've had any issues.

The error you get is not a BOINC error. It's is a Windows (registry) error, which is usually caused when your system is out of resources. Memory, page file, that sort of thing.

What happens when you do a full system reboot, then try to install BOINC & run BOINC?

I've uninstalled Boinc, shutdown, powered on, resinstalled Boinc. Same thing happens, error 1816 starts filling up the stdoutgui.txt file and the pc goes completely unresponsive. This is not immediate, it may take a day or two before the errors appear and the pc locks up.

When it does lock up, the Start Button may not work, or just show a partial menu, the task manager may not work or show an error message that it failed to initialize properly. As a result, I cannot perform a clean shutdown and have to power it off manually.

This sounds like a memory/system resource leak within Boinc.

But like I said, Boinc is the only application running on this machine. And without Boinc running, it does not lock up.

How much memory is BOINC showing as using in Windows Task Manager around these problems? We're looking into a memory leak in the client already through the alpha tests. Nothing firm about it found yet.

Try this:

1. Log on to your system with an administrator account, for example, owner or administrator.
   
2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
   
3. Right-click on the system drive (usually drive C), and then click Properties. *Click the Quota tab.
   
4. Either increase the amount of disk space available to users by changing the "Limit disk space to" option or disable the Disk quota.
   
5. Don't let kids play on the growed-up's computer

It's not locked up yet - I just restarted the pc this morning. So I'm monitoring it a couple of times a day, keeping Windows Task Manager up, to see if I can tell when it start going south.

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at that tab and I don't have disk quotas enabled:
Status: Disk quotas are disabled.

No kids in the house and the wife has her own laptop.

Also, check the size of your page file. I'd suggest minimimum size to be equal to amount of RAM (better yet set it to 1.5x physical RAM). Set the upper limit to max free space avaialable.

Low swap space should get you a little triangle in the system tray informing you that virtual memory is low and the swap file is being resized.

That notwithstanding, per Microsoft:

Error Message:
Not enough quota is available to process this command.

User Action:
Close some applications and try again. If you still get this message, choose System from Control Panel, then choose Virtual Memory and increase the size of your paging file.

FWIW: someobody on the interwebs with this error found that the "Dell Control Utility" installed with their "Dell Truemobile Wireless Networking" software was at fault. When it was deleted, the problem went away. Curiously enough, the wireless network continues to work fine (the affected computer being a desktop connected to the WAP by a Ethernet card/cable).

Found the problem with the exact error number you're reporting discussed here. The suggestion was made to peruse the information at this MS Knowlegebase link.

Another suggestion is to run system file checker. A popular consensus with this error is that its resultant of virus / malware activity, specifically Backdoor.

The pagefile is set to 1344MB to 2688MB
This machine has 1GB memory

I've run a full scan using Microsoft Security Essentials as well as a full checkdisk at system boot thinking it might be a harddrive issue. Neither one found any problems.

Its not a Dell and does not have wireless.

I ran System File Checker and it did not report anything, but then again, I don't know if it would - or just replaces them.

Here are some more clues.

Looking though the stdoutgui.txt file and counting back the days in the log from the evening of July 2nd (when I rebooted), there are 3 days of 1816 errors. That means it starting erroring out on June 30th.

Boinc had just finished two Astropulse work units and was trying to upload the results to Seti@Home on that day, but the Seti servers were down for maintenance.

So, could there be a resource leak in Boinc when it needs to upload work units but the Project's server is off-line?

Just a thought.

Mystery Solved! It was not Boinc.

I noticed tonight that the Total Handle Count in Task Manager was up over 350,000. That's not right.

Found a process called "vsnp2uvc.exe" had over 300,000 handles and was generating new ones at a rate of about 2 per second. Not sure how/when that software was installed, but I killed that process and the Handles count went back down to around 8000.

I did a search for vsnp2uvc.exe and removed all copies and rebooted. I'm doing a full virus scan again just to be sure. It does not show up in Task Manager anymore. Don't know if it was a virus/trojan or what, but Google search says its some USB camera software task. So I unplugged the camera for good measure.

Apologies for blaming Boinc. I guess I was too eager to 'shoot the messenger' for telling me something was messing with my pc and keeping it from doing its job.

Don't just delete files, they may be Windows required processes. Put it in an internet search engine first to see what it might be from.
