I have two systems running BOINC. One is on Ubuntu Lucid, the other on Windows Vista. I wanted to use rpc on the linux system, so I went to the Vista system and created a remote_hosts.cfg file, and also created a gui_rpc_auth.cfg (I thought the docs said it created one when BOINC starts, but there was no file). I restarted BOINC on that system, and tried to access it from the linux manager. No connect. I can ping one machine from the other (they're on the same subnet), and that works. I turned off the firewall, no help.

I tried to do the reverse. I did find a gui_rpc_auth.cfg in my linux BOINC dir, so I changed that password, created a remote_hosts.cfg, and restarted - from the windows machine I can't access the linux machine either.

One thing I did notice is when I select localhost on linux, I use the password I set in gui_rpc_auth.cfg, but on windows, it says the password is bad. Is windows saving the password somewhere else?

My Windows BOINC version is 6.10.56, and on Linux I'm using 6.10.17. Does that matter?

As far as I know, both hosts need the gui_rpc_auth.cfg, each containing the same password.

Did you place the files in the correct directory? (BOINC data directory)

Do you know the BOINC Wiki? There it's explained for all platforms.

Gundolf

No. Every computer will certainly have a password (and as Gundolf says, if you can't see a gui_rpc_auth.cfg file, you're looking in the wrong folder).

But they don't have to be the same. All that's required is that you (the user) knows the password for the remote computer (the one you're trying to control), and you can type, paste or otherwise enter it into the manager dialog on the computer you're using to do the controlling.

If you failed to find the right gui_rpc_auth.cfg file (and the fact that you got a bad password messge suggests that is the case), then you probably put the remote_hosts.cfg file in the wrong folder too.

Yes, I had been using the BOINC wiki to solve the problem, but when I started configuring remote access, the "unofficial" BOINC wiki said BOINCDIR on a windows system is \program files\BOINC (shame on them). Once I saw the official wiki's info on that location, I got things connected.

the "unofficial" BOINC wiki said BOINCDIR on a windows system is \program files\BOINC (shame on them).

Which is the correct place for BOINC versions 3, 4 and 5, when the unofficial BOINC Wiki was written and maintained.

But unfortunately, a google search for "boinc remote access" has the unofficial wiki at the top of the list. Any reason not to correct info on that wiki? It is still more complete than the official wiki (I was able to find out what ports to open from that wiki), but some of the info is incorrect.

Since it's a Wiki, go ahead and change its information. You may need to register for it. And then fight the maintainers. ;)
