There is a news item about this on the front page - the embargo was lifted at 09.00 UTC.

It refers to a simplified version of BOINC, which reportedly has a different directory structure. Existing BOINC users are strongly advised therefore not to be tempted by the prominent download button on the experiment homepage but to attach in the usual way (to http://bbc.cpdn.org). The size of the workunit does mean, however, that it is unsuitable for running multi-project.

This is a major boost for the BOINC community backed by a major media organisation. I am sure we will all be welcoming these new participants into the wonderful world of BOINC. They will, however, need a lot of reassurance as the BOINC aspect is apparently being deliberately underplayed by the BBC in order not to scare them off, and they may be confused by things that are second nature to people who have come by the previous routes which tend to stress BOINC first.

It has now been announced that this project will not be awarding BOINC credits. Most users will prefer to wait until the regular CPDN project starts issuing these units.

The BBC project was not really aimed at existing BOINC participants (and yes, they should have thought about them sooner).

Well, they are exporting the stats files and it is granting credit to people. I think the confusion is that the boinc credits from the bbc project will not show up on the climateprediction.net project. If you are attached to both projects, your user CPID should sync and the combinded stats sites will do the combination for you. :)

Is this Whole Climate experiment a big joke?

Because if it is then I think it is not to my taste!

Why are the BBC getting involved, why is anyone getting involved? I have been tracking the number of hosts which are Active and are currently submitting data and here are the current totals;

140 Countries 60,372 Hosts 5,575,403,212 Total


60,000 plus hosts thats not alot really don't you think, if the BBC wants to do something to truly justify the cost of it's TV Tax why doesn't it assign a BOD for a week to collect website addresses and Email Addresses to which someone from the BBC can send out an appeal letter to get this *experiment* either linked to or featured on their site?

The reason I fear is this, that nobody except a very small number of individuals cares and the BBC is simply profitting on a publicity stunt? Why don't you give people a usable guide to using ThreadMaster or whatever its called and then tell people that it is not recommended that they use this on a laptop, the reason is because you want to take minimum risk at maximum publicity?

Good idea but it needs action not words, publicity is something I would have thought the BBC was good at, perhaps the BBC can get some artists impressions of what Global Warming would look like and then spread these around via email (instead of simply trying to boost its TV ratings?), but perhaps cartoons of global warming may upset the Environmental campaigners/Repulican party or whatever it is called in the USA?

I wish you all the best of luck in this experiment and i do not wish to be rude, I think this is an excellent idea but you should take a tip from the business world, it is not the brightest design of mouse trap that make successful companies, it is the most well marketed mouse traps.

I'm not quite sure why cam is getting uptight about the BBC project: no-one is forcing him to do anything!
This experiment is mainly designed to attract new users, schools (where the subject of climate change is increasingly a concern for young people), businesses etc who might not have encountered the BOINC "community" before. It is NOT suitable for existing BOINC users (unless they have spare computers they can dedicate to the task) for the reasons indicated elsewhere in this thread by Andrew Hingston. I myself have tried to take it on board as part of my BOINC portfolio but, for various reasons, decided to detach after a few days.
To get to 60000 hosts in about 3 weeks seems an astonishingly successful achievement: only Seti, Einstein and the main CP projects have more. In 140 countries reflects the desire for people around the world to face up to a problem which could lead to a massive change in world climate within the lifetime of many alive today.
The BBC is not "profitting" on a publicity stunt; yes it has prepared television programmes on climate change - and will prepare programmes highlighting the experimental results. But that's its business - indeed it is obliged, under its charter, to consider all aspects of life.
Yes, there are technical problems for some users but these are recognised and explained.
And comments on "TV tax" are irrelevant from someone who doesn't pay it.
By the way, I have no connection with the BBC!

If you wish to rant about the BBC, perhaps it would be better to send an email or whatever to the BBC. This Board discuses technical issues involving the Boinc Manager and as no connection to the BBC. Boinc is open source software that anyone can use for its own purpose as long as it is within the licensing parameters.

And this notice board is linked directly from the BBC Website so where else do you propose that I send my suggestions (at first glance) for the BBC?

So you were actually moaning about a 'tax' that you don't pay...take a tip from the business world and don't bother arguing about taxes that you are not paying. LOL

For one I like paying the licence fee - better than endless adverts interrupting programmes on Sky.

As to global climate change, if the research that I've seen on the possible past effect of global dimming are right then, as that effect lessens, we can look forward to living in interesting times.

Lastly, it is now 168,000 hosts and rising.
