Hello.

I've just migrate from WinXP Pro x86 to Win7 Ultimate 64bit. I also installed the 6.10.43 -was using 6.10.36 on WinXP.

With the Boinc Client closed, I copied the files from the old O/S \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC to the new O/S \ProgramData\BOINC, but when I run the Boinc Manager from the Win7 I got the messages below:

Which indeed empties all my cache, leave me with no DUs at all.
Is the pass from 32bit to 64bit O/S valid for moving the cache as I did? Or I just have to wait to download new ones?

I still have access to the old O/S Boinc files, if needed in a solution.

Thanks in advance.

I copied the files

That's your problem, you need to copy the whole BOINC directory with all sub-directories from the old place to the new place, and then install the new BOINC to that new place.

By just copying the files from the old BOINC data directory, your new BOINC won't find the special files it needs in the \BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\ directory and discard of those files in the client_state.xml file.

- uninstall BOINC.

- Copy over the whole BOINC directory from \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ to \ProgramData\ (I omit the mention of BOINC, as you're copying the whole directory over, so its name will be moved as well. Else you could end up with \ProgramData\BOINC\BOINC\)

- install BOINC

(And we do this reinstalling to make sure that all permissions on the new BOINC directory are set up correctly, as you're copying the old directory over, which includes the permissions of the older OS/user).

- run BOINC.

My mistake for the misunderstanding.
I had copied the whole Boinc directory as you've said, not just the files.

So, I tried again but using the uninstall/install of Boinc this time.
The messages 'discarding' appeared again, so "no go".

I saw that the init_data.xml files (\slot folders) contain two tags which may need fixing to point to the new path (\ProgramData\Boinc).

These are:
<project_dir>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu</project_dir>
<boinc_dir>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC</boinc_dir>

Are there any other files that contain such references which need fixing? (or I'm going the wrong way here?)

4/11/2010 8:05:37 PM Platform changed from windows_intelx86 to windows_x86_64

That's your problem, you changed platforms, and your app_info eithier doesn't have platform entries or the wrong ones,

Restore your Boinc Data directory again, but don't start Boinc,
head over to Lunatics, and get the latest 64bit Beta Installer, you might have post a couple of times to get it,
run the 64bit installer, it'll put extra platform tags in, both windows_intelx86 and windows_x86_64,
as well as 6.09 and 6.08 entries for maximum compatibility,
now start Boinc,

I did as you told me but again all cache was "discarded"... :-(
The log entries of Boinc are exactly the same as before.

I really do not want to just drop the 178 data units from the "32bit-setup"...

Any other thoughts?

PS. Thank Claggy for your time

You could temporarily uninstall the 64bit version of BOINC and install the 32bit version. Then set No New Tasks and run all that work, upload & report it.

Then uninstall this BOINC, install the 64bit version, install the correct optimized applications and set Allow New Tasks.

Use 32bit Boinc instead, run down the cache, then install 64bit Boinc.

Well, no matter what combination of Boinc I use (32bit or 64bit, older version or new version etc), it still refuse to work the old data units.
Well I give up. Sorry to my wingmen...
I'm just waiting for new data units to come out :(

You probably still need platform entries of 'windows_intelx86' in your app_info,
