Hi No matter what I do I cannot get BOINC to run on startup. I downloaded ver 6:10:43 two days ago. - I have checked the "run manager at login" box. - I have both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe in my startup file in windows - Windows firewall and defender are both turned OFF - I run Kaspersky Internet Security but even if I totally disable it, BOINC will still not run on startup - In Kaspersky I have Boinc and all its attendant application files listed as "trusted" - I am NOT running BOINC as a "service" - I have over 30 gigs of unused disk space - I am running Vista home premium What do I do to get boinc to run on computer startup?? Thanks Traver |

- I have both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe in my startup file in windows Remove these please. BOINC Manager starts the client (boinc.exe). Since boinc.exe can only be started once, you may have a conflict. When using "Run Manager at login" a bit is set in the registry, where BM will start from. Since you only just installed BOINC, did you reboot? Not log off and log back on, but do a full power cycle? This is needed so Windows recognizes the accounts BOINC made for itself. Turning the firewall off may not be a good idea, but even if you turn it off, it's never completely off. Especially not when UAC is still active. |

Hi Prior to my first email I had done full reboots numerous times. In the boinc manager I have the "run always" option chencked. I have now deleted all references to boinc in my startup file and have done a full reboot. I now get the "Failed to establish a connection" when I pass my mouse over the Boinc icon in the system tray. The application will only start when I right click on the tray Icon and select "Open World Community Grid-Boinc Mnanger". IE...still no auto start up Any more thoughts?? Thanks Traver |

I now get the "Failed to establish a connection" when I pass my mouse over the Boinc icon in the system tray. But that means the application is started up! Otherwise, there would be no icon in the system tray. Only the GUI (the BOINC manager) failed to start/connect to the client. That shouldn't occur either, but it's something to investigate other than a client not starting at all. Did you try the install from the BOINC site (not the WCG one)? My install was from the BOINC site. But then, why would you be told to "Open World Community Grid-Boinc Manager"? Gruß, Gundolf |

Can you please check in Software (Start->Control Panel->Software) if you have both BOINC and World Community BOINC installed? And if you do, could you please uninstall WCG BOINC? |

I do not have "(Start->Control Panel->Software) " what I do have is (Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features)...I am in classic mode. When I look under Programs and features I have Boinc bur I do not have WCGBoinc. BUT..I think you may be on to something. In my very original install I installed from the Boinc site as I stated...HOWEVER when I went to the WCG site I was confused by they're asking me to install WCGBoinc. Since they did not say that WCG Boinc was not needed if I had already installed the original Boinc, I installed WCG Boink from the WCG site. In other words I guess I installed the app twice...once from each site and installed the WCGBoing over top of the original Boinc. After that, nothting would work so I reinstalled Boink from the Boink site and everything started to work except it will not auto connect and start. I have to manually load the manager to actually get any work started. Would a complete uninstall and re-install possibly fix things. If I do that do I have to re-link to all my projects and re-state all my preferences? Will I be able to use the same Username and Passwords etc etc. Thanks for the help |

Yes, please, do a full uninstall. Before you do a reinstall though, navigate to your BOINC Data directory (default C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ on Windows Vista and Windows 7) and delete the cc_config.xml file (WCG BOINC makes one automatically). Then reinstall Berkeley BOINC. World Community Grid has its own BOINC client, which is essentially the same as the Berkeley BOINC client, but with some touches of their own (skins and different names, plus the aforementioned cc_config.xml file which Berkeley BOINC will not install on its own. The user must make it by himself if there's trouble.) |

Would a complete uninstall and re-install possibly fix things? Possibly, but I don't know much about WCG. So, best you'd use Jord's removal FAQ and then search your computer (including registry and hidden directories) for any remnants of BOINC. If I do that do I have to re-link to all my projects and re-state all my preferences? Your online preferences are not affected by an uninstall. If you make a backup copy of your BOINC data directory, your local preferences and links to your projects are saved too. All you'll have to do is restore the data directory before you reinstall BOINC [edit]and delete the WCG cc_config.xml[/edit]. Will I be able to use the same Username and Passwords etc etc. Yes, of course. As stated before, the uninstall is a strictly local affair and doesn't involve your online settings. Gruß, Gundolf [edit]As usual, Jord was faster :-)[/edit] |
