i'm running 6.10.18. when the screensaver runs, all i get is the Boinc logo and the text "this computer is participating in XXXXX" but no actual graphics. i have my video card drivers updated (i think). if i remember correctly, i was getting them (graphics) at first but now... nada. the rest of the time, i get "Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server" messages. i've tried with and w/o my proxy server but no matter what, that's what i end up with. ideas? |

And what kind of videocard, brand and model? Which drivers version are you using for it? What if you click on the Show Graphics button in BOINC Manager? |

My guess would be Seti. And then it's because you use your GPU to do calculations with. Since the GPU cannot do and task calculations and calculate graphics at the same time, Seti decided to only give out a CUDA application without the added graphics application. Well, just about any project that uses CUDA and ATI applications won't give out a graphics application with that, they'll only give that out on CPU applications. Please see my CUDA & CAL FAQ for a lot more information. |

And what kind of videocard, brand and model? at first, it was just worldcommunitygrid, docking and cosmology at home that wouldn't display graphics but now NOTHING WILL. |

Jord, is the SS BOINC logo bouncing automatically disabled when doing idle GPU processing on BOINC? Good question. As far as I can see from the code, CUDA or CAL computing won't disable running graphics, but essentially because the GPU is used to do calculations, projects tend not to give out a graphics app with their GPU app. I think you'll find the bouncing logo to be a thing of the past, though. ;-) |

I'm not sure, so I asked the developers about that. |

OK, I got a couple of answers, shot some questions back and got those answered as well. What happens at this moment is that there is no check in BOINC whether or not a screen saver is activated when you are running work on the GPU. It very much depends on the screen saver/graphics application of the project what kind of impact it has. A small graphics app, such as the one by Leiden, will have neigh on no impact. A bigger one such as Seti's (32MB for Seti Enhanced, 48MB for Astropulse) will easily kill work in progress. WCG's screen saver is a huge one, you do that math. ;-) Of course, any 3D screen saver, not just those of any BOINC project, but those in Windows itself or installed by you or another program, will have an impact on crunching with the GPU and can work to fail. And don't forget that the normal Graphics Device Interface (GDI) already uses between 8 and 10MB of video memory on any given resolution/bit-depth. So at this time the general advice is not to use the screen saver when you use the GPU on any project. When you do anyway, then don't complain your work is going down the drain. The devs will now look into a possibility to disable work on the GPU when the screen saver kicks in. Why do it that way, why not disable the screen saver when work is done on the GPU? Because of the guiding principle: BOINC should do as much computing as possible but remain "invisible". So thanks Rob, for that question. |
