Remember that BOINC is not just the client and graphical user interface running on your computer. BOINC also runs on the project servers, in the form of the whole back-end code, the scheduler, the forums, the specific values in the mySQL database. That's all BOINC.

So while the BOINC client will recognize this resource share setting to be one for a backup project, the project itself should also know that this new setting is allowed. In changeset [trac]changeset:20315[/trac] you can see that these changes are done both in the client and in the project code. Yet for any project to use this code, it'll need to update to that changeset of BOINC back-end code.

And you need to run a newer client version of the software, as older versions will not recognize this new setting. I wonder what they do with an RS = 0. ;-)

Ah, answer from David: pre-6.10.30 clients will set zero resources shares to a small non-zero value.

Well, if that is true then it could take a long time! Depending how often a project "updates" their code. Until then it will be useless!

So start pestering the project devs.

Do know that some of the projects run their own code interweaved into the BOINC code and that updating to a newer version of the BOINC code will break their own code. Think of projects such as Leiden Classical, Primegrid, Cosmology@Home, WCG and Einstein@Home (CPDN as well?).

Even the projects that run bog-standard BOINC back-end code will sometimes find that upgrading to the latest version available will break their project. Which will then take a lot of man-power (and money) to correct.

Yes. The project people have a long list of mods that need to be done each time the BOINC code gets upgraded.

You could try .0000001 at non updated site. My test indicates that this value is accepted on projects which haven't updated there server software. This will set the resource share in the client_state.xml to 0. The account_project.xml will have a value of .0000001 as its RS. I'm not sure which file the Boinc manager looks at to determine that the project is to be used only as a backup. Anyway you could give it a try. I always have too much work on hand to test this properly.
