Hello, I'm part of a team developing an app for what I hope will be a forthcoming Boinc project. However we've hit the problem that there only seems to be the facility to run Boinc servers on Linux, either directly or via virtualisation you have to deal with Linux, along with all the associated server daemons. The problem is that nobody on the team has any experience dealing with Linux, and I can't seem to find a way to build the server directly within Windows. Does anyone know how to do that, and could point me in the right direction please? Thanks very much! |

I don't think it can be done, as it will break a lot of the code, since that's written with Linux in mind. I've just asked one of the developers and he says he hasn't heard of anyone doing a port to Windows either, because of the loads of breaking stuff. In the end it's more expensive than it's worth. It may be easier to learn about how to deal with Linux then. Having said that, it might be possible to run the server code on Windows with Cygwin installed. But even then it's a lot of figuring out for yourself as no-one has done it before. |

Thank you for your speedy response :) Not the response I was hoping for but I'll try to get BOINC set up and working via Cygwin; if I have positive results, I'll be sure to check back in and share. Once again, thanks for your time. |

I probably don't need to say this, but please do log everything you do. As you may be the first to do it and get it working, I am sure that the developers will want to know then as well and that we can add it to the Back-end installation Wiki. |

The problem is that nobody on the team has any experience dealing with Linux, and I can't seem to find a way to build the server directly within Windows. If you have no experience with Linux, you'll feel just as lost in cygwin. Maybe you'll have more problems in cygwin than in a native Linux system... |

Installing Linux is not that difficult these days. I prefer Fedora for servers and Ubuntu for the desktop, but either will work. Both have package managers to make it easy to install the necessary software. There is lots of documentation about this and you might be able to get help locally. So then you have to build and install BOINC. In addition to the documentation at Berkeley, you may find this helpful: http://www.spy-hill.net/~myers/help/boinc/Create_Project.html -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats |
