Yesterday I installed a different anti-virus software but everything seemed to be running fine. Restarted PC before heading to bed. Came back this morning to a lot of "allow" messages from anti-v, and found that all of my projects were gone, including one from climateprediction that had been running for some time.

BOINC proceeded to get a batch of new projects, and otherwise now is running but what the heck happened? Was running as daemon. I did nothing to get it restarted, didn't have to re-attach to projects or anything. All projects were (I think) set to no-new-tasks. Log shows as follows with essentially similar for each project, state file but no account file:

OK, I've tried to label ALL BOINC-related processes as safe, both for AV and firewall, but I thought I had done that yesterday. I've changed both AV and firewall softwares before, and never had this happen.

Likewise with Norton Sonar.

In that case, the flagged behaviour (there were four, but I stupidly didn't note them. I think they included high CPU usage, no user interface and maybe high network activity) were exactly the characteristics that you would expect of a BOINC application. I sent Symantec a stinking complaint, and I'm running a test version to see if it crops up again nothing yet.

Sonar has caught both CPDN and Einstein, and from what I can tell it can't be switched off, and it can't be taught the difference between 'good' and 'bad' apps until after it's caught them and prevented them from running.

Prevented - or suspending - them from running till I could approve them would have been fine. The CPDN that got tossed was well along - and dumping all tasks was a little over-reaching. Will be watching to see if this shows up again, but seems to be doing OK at this point.

I am having this problem with 6.10.17 on Linux with NO FIREWALL installed on my machines at all. I have all my machines behind a Cisco PIX firewall, so, I just don't use the OS firewall. In addition, my BOINC instance appears to get deinstalled by ..... Well.... I can't say because there is no logging or indication that it is being done. Even the boinccmd binary and gui_rpc_auth.cfg the disappears, so, I can't stop it cleanly. Killing everything with a soft-kill works, but, when I re-install the software (with the files in place *or* restored afterwords) the clients have all detached... A lot of the error messages are similar to what the rest of this thread seems to be experiencing. I have to reattach again, but, it does succeed in picking up the same client ID...

It's like I woke up in the twilight zone..

And before I get the neophyte questions and doubts... I have been in computer science for over 30 years... I may be a bit crispy at the edges, but, I have been running boinc since 2006 and I have never had problems like this before.

What could be going on here.... ????

Which Linux?
Is a software firewall installed, or not? You don't make that clear, as first you say you don't have it installed, then say you just don't use it. Most Linux distros come with some form of soft-firewall pre-installed.

How do the binaries and other files disappear? Are they deleted? There one moment, gone the next? Did you in that case do a spyware/malware scan on the system, no matter how unlikely it may be that there are actually virii for Linux around?

Is the machine your own, or an office machine? If the latter, are you allowed to run BOINC? Can't it be that a sysadmin is removing all traces of BOINC from your system? or in case this is a home-situation, someone else on the computer who's getting rid of things he or she finds unnecessary?

OK....

The Linux does not really matter... but... they are all a flavor of RedHat or Fedora. They do have IPTABLES installed and completely disabled.

The files just disappear... The inodes are still there by the fact that the boinc instance does not exit, but, all references to the inode are gone.

And... finally the only version that is different is a boinc instance of 6.5.x... and that one does not have the problems....

How did you install BOINC? Package manager or sh from Berkeley?

I always use the sh install... (It's the only way to get consistent updates.) I manually start my sessions after reboot. Most of my systems will be up and crunching for months at a stretch. (I think I have about 15 active machines at the moment) which is probably why I don't have a clue as to when the binaries disappear.

I use the run_client method rather than letting the manager start the session.

There is one difference in my install from a standard. I use a symbolic link for the BOINC directory. While the boinc instance is installed in an NFS mounted home directory, i.e. /home/john/BOINC.... the symbolic link points the storage to -> /tmp/john/BOINC. In this manner all systems have their own install and I can still manage them with the same commands as if the home directories were located on a local drive. Just to be more clear..... My home directory is NFS mounted, but, the BOINC instance is on a local hard drive. (albeit in the /tmp partition). My systems do not clear the /tmp when they restart.

There does not appear to be any difference whether SELINUX is enabled or not. Most of them are, but, the problem appears regardless.

There appears to be no difference in whether the install is Fedora or RedHat. I have FC6, FC9 and FC11 installed on various machines. One FC6 and one FC11 have an older BOINC on them 6.5.x and they don't show issues (except they complain that I should update to the newer BOINC). The RedHat installs are EN5.x or CentOS 5.x. The CentOS machines get patched regularly. The RedHat does not. It is in a particular configuration for testing and needs to stay static.

One other nagging problem is that the BOINC manager stops updating the screen. I stops until I move the mouse or contibute some other form of input. Perhaps this traces to something in a newer X library. It, also, is not present in the 6.5.x version.

No, it's not the NFS mount. Been running like that since 2006... It's something recently introduced into the code base. Perhaps I need to crawl into the code. I just don't have the time these days. Oh well.. I guess I will just need to create a backup for BOINC and just periodically dump it. That should take less time than trying to understand someone else's code.

At least the issue has some documentation now. If you find anything, I can be contacted with my email address....
