I installed and am using Boinc - SETI - and have had only a few of the operational problems noted here - all fixed fairly quickly thank goodness. The one problem that drives me nuts is that the screensaver comes up and runs but when I move the mouse to go back to work the screen freezes and there is no way to get out of it except a reboot. I turned the screensaver off and everything else works well but part of the reason for doing this whole thing was the cool screensaver. Frankly without that little benefit BOINC is just something else loaded at start up that may be affecting the way other programs work and as it is not essential should be ripped out. I started the SETI thing back in 2000 and have enjoyed it for the most part. But since I haven't seen anything good about the screensaver written here I am beginning to think I should pull the plug.

Anyone got ideas?

Boinc is not Seti. It is the reason Seti still exist since Seti ran out funding a long time ago. Boinc provides the money to keep Seti going. Some of reasons for the change in Seti were explained by Matt Lebofsky in a posting a while back. If interested you can read it here Why did we have to move to BOINC?

As for your graphics (I personally consider the Screensaver a waste of cycles), there is an issue with ATI video chips and Boinc. The drivers need to be the latest update. I haven't been able to locate a post on the Seti forum where this was explained. Hopefully someone else can provide more precise information.

Ok I'm no there to get into a tastes great/less filling arguement. SETI still exists or we wouldn't be crunching data. BOINC is just a front end for it and many other projects. It is the Seti@home software and the method of data analysis that has been replaced. All of that is directly from the reference you quoted.
None of which is relevant to my post. The only relevant part of your reply was that the ATI chipset has issues with the screensaver. I thank you for that, i tmay be useful. The rest was background noise.

Sorry about the preaching. I'd just finished replying to a couple of post in the help desk from people complaining about Boinc and wanting their old Seti back. I just didn't change gears fast enough.

Merlin,

Here is a link to a thread I wrote on the Einstein board about graphics drivers, containing all the info you should need to update them. That may solve your screensaver problem, may not. Here's hoping. :-)

Regards,

Michael
