Just wondering if the computer time/power usage I donate to Boinc projects can some how generate a tax deduction?

I have several machines running boinc and when they are idle they still consume electricity which costs me.

I'd like to know if I can deduct the power costs to run the computers?

This has been discussed several time over the years at Seti, and the simple answer is NO.

And why is that?

the computers aren't free and neither is the power to run them.
Isn't this the same as making a cash donation to the project of interest?

I think this topic needs further detailed discussion.
