I have a question regarding the proper shutdown of BOINC. From what I can tell, there are two methods. One: right-click on the BOINC icon in the system tray, select "suspend", then select "exit". Two: Individually suspending each project under the projects tab, then selecting "exit". It seems that method one would be the most user-friendly, but I don't want to risk losing any work. In a nutshell, what is the proper way to shut down BOINC without losing work/data? Do I need to "suspend" at all before exiting BOINC? Thanks so much... Be kind, I'm a newbie. When I think of it, I click on exit to shut Boinc down. Most times, I just do a normal shut down the computer without exiting Boinc. I've never had any problem with any of my work other than possibly losing a few minutes of crunch time. Boinc V 7.4.36 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB NVidia 470 |

There were undoubtedly problems with early versions of BOINC, which failed to detect that an application was still running before shutting down. For that reason the recommendation was to suspend prior to exiting. But recent discussion on the CPDN board, where the application was especially vulnerable to this, suggests that the problem has been fixed unless you are running Win98/ME. I only bothered to suspend BOINC itself, though, not individual projects, and there would not normally be a need to do that when shutting down. On the other hand, suspending prior to exit would be a way of controlling any problems when starting BOINC. If you have any problems there, removing BOINC from the startup folder, and manually starting BOINC before setting it to run would ensure that you could satisfy yourself that each element was performing properly. |
