After running a project on BOINC, approximately 30 minutes, my CPU fan goes into high gear, and I'm wondering if this is a bad thing, that it might hurt my PC.

FYI: My PC is HP M490N, 3.4GHz, 1G RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, Pentium 4 HT.

My BOINC Disk Usage Settings:
Use no more than 150GB disk space
Leave at least 50GB disk space free
Use no more than 25% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use no more than 50% of total virtual memory.

I'm unsure about my BOINC Disk Usage Settings, so any suggestions, especially ones that result in my CPU fan staying in low gear, would be much appreciated.

BOINC runs the processor at 100% all the time. It is normal for the fan to speed up in this case. As long as you are still within tolorences you should be ok.

If it's an ASUS mainboard you can use their ASUS PC PROBE utility.

Other mainboards might have a similar utility.

An excellent generic utility is Motherboard Monitor. The developer isn't making any newer versions of it, but it may work for you.

If your system is a laptop, it will help to get some air moving under it, never close the cover completely while it's running and put a small portable fan next to it. Makes about 5-10 degrees C. difference on my hard drive temp. and the internal fan comes on only occasionally.
